Looking for a replacement for Ava Hotel, mid-June

Hello everyone,

I had previously booked Ava for 4 nights at the beginning of June, to stay upon our arrival in Greece. After reading many posts, we determined that we are moving Athens to the end of our trip. Unfortunately Ava is already full for our new dates in the middle of the month (we are on the wait list). I loved its proximity to the Acropolis and the Plaka neighborhood and it felt safe.

I would appreciate your assistance with narrowing down a good replacement. There are two of us and I would like to stay in the same price range of $325 a night and as close to the same location. Thank you in advance.

FOr the best answer, it's thoughtful to supply specific dates, not just "middle of the month" -- with exact days, sometimes we can ascertain quickly if our recommend is available... and avoid time-wasting for everyone.

My quick-browse tip is to use the booking dot com link that has a special filter for 'landmarks/Acropolis" - which means it tells u how far every listing is from that Famous Rock; here's a tinyurl (bookmark it) https://tinyurl.com/heq6edp BTW booking.com now also lists pvtly-owned apts in this same desirable area, often at rates comparable to (or even less than) area hotels. NOTE: When u put in your info & click search & a list comes up, do not scroll down the list. Instead click the RH icon "Show on Map" and then you will see the whole area ... with blue balloons for each place (or apt) this agency represents. Those with red center = fully booked. Others when touched will show cheapest accom available... when u click to open often they will show availabilites of higher-rate rooms too.

Places I recommend near Ava and "the ROck" would be AIrotel Parthenon -- just a few 100 metres south, and "sister hotels" Hotel Herodion (just west of Acrop Museum block) & Hotel Phillipos just S. ditto) plus Hotel Hera all have higher rooms w. PArthenon-view windows/balconies, Herodion & Hera have rooftop dining or cocktail terrace. Also in Area is Athens Gate Hotel, but I don't reocmmend because it faces directly on the heavy-heavy traffic Amailas Ave/becoming Singrou Ave -- 6-8 lanes traffic 24/7. The others, like Ava, are inside the smaller Plaka streets, crossing pedestrianized lanes, lots of trees, quieter.

Thank you Janet, for security reasons I don't want to give my exact dates. I was more hoping that other posters had stayed with the hotels in the area and could offer their own experiences. I did use your link to booking.com and the alternative options it lists have my intrigued. In fact, I learned a new word, Apart-tel or apartment/hotels, and believe that one of them may work for us. Do any posters have experience or have heard about 12 Keys Apartments? I did a search for the name on the board and came up with nothing.

Those names are created by the residents who decide to rent their own apts --- or,, by the persons/businesses who have purchased these apts. for the purpose of renting them out fulltime. They are not hotels, nor part of a company. Sometimes they list reviews... I am not sure who validates. I will say one thing about these rentals, I'd rather rent such places thru booking dot com than VRBO -- there are standards to meet, and guarantees, and if there's a glitch, you turn to Booking dot com to deal with it.

Did u look at any of the hotels I listed? They are mostly under your budget limit, but may be booked for popular june dates.

We love the Ava. Another hotel that we also really like close by is the AthensWas. If you can spurge an Acropolis View room is well worth it. A lovely terrace overlooks the Parthenon and has one of the best private views of any hotel in the surrounding area. My only drawback is that the room aesthetics are a bit modern for my taste.

Thank you Janet. Yes, I did look at the hotels you listed, and you called it in your follow up post; they are under budget for what we are looking for. Your link to booking.com was very valuable, however because it led me to what I think is my final choice. Lewis98110 I did look at AthensWas, it is beautiful, but pricey. I am able to get a full apt. @ 12 Keys for 1/5 of the price of a suite. Since we blew our lodging budget (I planned to do this) for Caldera View in Santorini, I was trying to take a more restrained approach in Athens. I think that unless I get a poster that says they stayed there and had a horrible experience, my eyes are wide open going in. The reviews on booking.com reference give it a 9.6, with one negative review stating that no one is available during overnight hours, which shouldn't affect us.

I stayed at the Herodian hotel for my last night in Athens. My room did have a view of the Acropolis, and the local school yard, which was used by the neighbourhood kids until about 9 pm. Had a nice dinner at the restaurant a good nights sleep and an excellent cooked breakfast in the very busy breakfast room. Close to the Acropolis Museum and the metro. I would stay there again.

THat mention of overlooking the local schoolyard reminds me of a wonderful Greek observance that takes place in Early June -- and if anyone's in a village or Greek town or city the first week of June, I URGE you to find out about. It's the "Last Day of School" celebration, which involves children's performances in the yard, before familiy/friends applauding, with music, singing, priizes, balloons, confetti etc! I accidentally encountered this in Athens, one June, while walking by the very school mentioned here. I heard the music the laughter, the clapping.. obviously a happy occasion. When I asked the friendlly staff at my dear hotel, Phaedra they said, oh, that's End-of-School party!

A couple years later, in early Jlune I was with friends in Nafplio. After drinks at harborside I went with one person to have dinner-- my mistake!! -- while two others had snacked earlier, & headed out in direction of musical sounds. It was the primary school Celebration. These bold women, pretending they were "ya-yas" (grandmothers) marched right in and sat with parents, applauding songs & recitals, cheering for award recipients, having a great time & welcomed by all. Another longtime forum friend wrote me about attending the graduation ceremonies in a small outdoor amphitheatre on Mykonos. To receive primary school diplomas, at least there, children must demonstrate mastery of the three most-used traditional Greek dance steps. Can you imagine that anywhere else? All I'm saying is that if you're in Greece in early June, ask around!
