THat mention of overlooking the local schoolyard reminds me of a wonderful Greek observance that takes place in Early June -- and if anyone's in a village or Greek town or city the first week of June, I URGE you to find out about. It's the "Last Day of School" celebration, which involves children's performances in the yard, before familiy/friends applauding, with music, singing, priizes, balloons, confetti etc! I accidentally encountered this in Athens, one June, while walking by the very school mentioned here. I heard the music the laughter, the clapping.. obviously a happy occasion. When I asked the friendlly staff at my dear hotel, Phaedra they said, oh, that's End-of-School party!
A couple years later, in early Jlune I was with friends in Nafplio. After drinks at harborside I went with one person to have dinner-- my mistake!! -- while two others had snacked earlier, & headed out in direction of musical sounds. It was the primary school Celebration. These bold women, pretending they were "ya-yas" (grandmothers) marched right in and sat with parents, applauding songs & recitals, cheering for award recipients, having a great time & welcomed by all. Another longtime forum friend wrote me about attending the graduation ceremonies in a small outdoor amphitheatre on Mykonos. To receive primary school diplomas, at least there, children must demonstrate mastery of the three most-used traditional Greek dance steps. Can you imagine that anywhere else? All I'm saying is that if you're in Greece in early June, ask around!
