Kalambaka train ticket + Meteora hiking question

I am going to Athens for several days in mid October and I am nearly finished planning it, except there's a few questions I would like to ask and hope you can assist. We plan to DIY all the way through and not go on tour

1) For Meteora, we don't intend to go by tour and for DIY, from what I am aware of, you need to purchase train ticket on this website i.e.
https://tickets.hellenictrain.gr/dromologia/?lang=en

However, when I clicked on the above, I tend to find very difficult navigating because at the top of the screen i.e. where it says trip finder, and just below it, when I try to click the location and type from where to where for the location I intend to purchase, I am unable to choose it. Do you guys have any problems? Also they are in greek too, I am unable to turn it into english other than in homepage. A bit frustrating here.

2) We intend to hike Meteora the next morning and visit few Monasteries (mainly is for outdoor though) as we will take the 5pm back to Athens. In that case, how many hours do you recommend to go for and what time to start? I know the tour has like 4 hours and we want to take our time. So if we start at 8am and then come back to catch the train before 5pm, would it be too early? Or starting at 10am and conclude by 4pm will be sufficient etc

3) I heard that DIY hike can be a bit difficult (not the slope) but rather the direction? Or it is easy to hike if we follow the Google map?

4) We intend to take the 1st class return and I heard the view is beautiful. So if we are heading to Kalambaka, is seating on the left hand side better? (on the way back does not matter as it will be dark by then when we return back to Athens)

Your answer will be greatly appreciated

Kind regards

purchase, I am unable to choose it.

If you select on the left "Athens" as place of departure you will find Kalambaka as destination in the selection on the right.

If no destination appears, it's could be an internet browser problem (disable anti-advertising plug-ins if you have any)

  1. Select Kalambaka , and the date and you will see the trains displayed.
  2. Select the train then click on the top right on "Seat selection"
  3. Choose the car and the seat, enter the name of the passenger and click on "Add Passenger" to add other people

It is not possible to book more than 3 or 4 weeks in advance. Anyway you can get your tickets at Athens station.

Regarding hiking at Meteora see this website: https://meteoratrails.com/

Hi JoLui

Thanks for the reply

I am aware that only 3-4 weeks in advance but I was trying to play the dates for say these couple of weeks but still did not work in terms of displaying the destination.
I did try on the desktop AND on my mobile/cell phone, it just that when it comes to selecting the destination, it will not show the list of station which I find very strange as it has never before, so therefore its def. not to do with advertisement issue

I even emailed to their website last week and still yet to get a response. At least I got a few months to go

I just tried again on the website with Firefox and Chrome (with a Windows PC).
In both cases, I had to reload the page (F5 on PC) to be able to display the cities drop-down menu.

On Firefox I had a "I Don't care about cookies" plug-in which also blocked the cities drop-down menu.

Then after the reload I had no problem setting Athens as the starting point and Kalambaka as the destination.

Hi JoLui

Brilliant!
You saved my day
It worked after pressing F5 as I tried using others like iMac, Chrome, Firefox so you are such a genius!

I will be getting the first class since it is ONLY off by EUR5 difference so it will def. be worth it

Attached the train map (for first car), as I will be going with my wife, which seat. no is the best to reserve on the very front of A1 as shown below?

Can I assume it is no. 1 and 3 (marked in RED BOX for the screenshot above) since you can see the view not only the side way but in front of the train as well?

NB: disregard the WHITE colour availability since there are 3 months to go and I will be booking on the earliest day availability i.e. 3 weeks before

Correct me if I am wrong

Thank you once again!

Glad the webpage is now working.

Regarding the train trip to Kalambaka, sorry but I have no idea where the best seats are. Perhaps other travelers who have taken 1st class seats could tell you.

Since this is just a traditional non-scenic train, in my opinion being in front, unless you can sit with the train driver at the head of the train, will give you nothing more than being closer to the interior front wall of the wagon :))
