Kalamata to Olympia

My husband and I will be visiting the Peloponnese the end of June. We are undecided about our routes from Kalamata to Olympia - please offer some advice.

Coastal Route: Kalamata → Pylos → Marathopoli → Kyparissia → Olympia
OR
Mountain Heartland Route: Kalamata → Messene →Megalopoli → Karytaina → Andritsaina (Temple of Epicurean Apollo) → Olympia

OR

A mix of both i.e. Kalamata → Messene → Pylos and travel up the coast
OR
Kalamata → Messene → Meligalas → coast → Olympia

Any insight would be appreciated.
BTW - we are active 70 year olds who are comfortable driving in new areas, love both the ocean and the mountains.

TIA

If you’re starting early I would do both of the first two options, one on the way there & one on the way back :) it will be a long day but you will see a lot of variation.

You do not indicate if you are doing this as a day trip or one way to Olympia.

I did this as a day trip and took the quickest route suggested by Google Maps. By the time I was done with the archeological site, the archeological museum, and the History of Olympic Games museum, it was 7 pm and I still had a drive back to Kalamata. I visited in mid October.

So my suggestion if you are doing this as a day trip is to decide on your priorities. If it is Olympia and you want to visit the museums in addition to the site, I suggest getting there first and then depending on when you finish, decide on which route you want to take on the way back to Kalamata. If you take the coastal route back, you can stop at Voidokilia Beach for sunset. It's gorgeous. In June, you will have a little more daylight than I did in October.

On the coastal route heading to Olympia, I encountered a lot of speed traps and police cars a couple of times chasing the offenders. Something to keep in mind as you are driving.

Thank you for your replies. I am sorry that I wasn't more clear. We will be staying overnight in Olympia and then will head to Delphi. It does sounds great to do one route going one direction and come back on the other route but I will need to choose one or the other. Would you have a preference for one or the other?
Thanks so much

Oh, ok, in that case it really is your choice, if you start early you could visit Ancient Messene & the Temple on your way using the mountain route but parts of the coastal route are beautiful too, a slight detour to see Nestor’s Palace, long stretches of almost deserted beach if you fancied a stop off, you just need to decide how active you feel you can be on the way :) This is the problem with Greece, so many choices! I’ve lived here 20 years & still struggle to decide where to visit next 🤪

That does seem to be a problem - every time I come to the forums I find new adventures - I will just have to visit again in the future. Thank you for your reply.
