Itinerary help

Hi! My husband and I are planning our 10 year wedding anniversary trip for July 2026, hoping to get some itinerary input. We’ve never traveled to Greece before. Flying from Newark NJ and will be able to spend around 14-16 days on the vacation.

We were thinking Athens, Milos, Paros, Naxos and Santorini.

Mainly looking for beaches and quaint towns.

Very open to completely changing the island plan for one that is better- we got that sample itinerary off a travel blog, but just starting our research.

Are you choosing July in order to have your trip include the Exact Anniversary date?? Or is it because of job restrictions? If it is the former -- I would urge you to adjust the dates earlier. July is the HOttest Month, it's High Season, and the large crowds could diminish your experience. You'd do much better if you could at least do the last 2 weeks of June -- and from Mid-May to Mid-June would be even better.

Your list does sound like a sample lifted from an online travel (Blog??) source -- probably commercial. Since you have tons of time I urge you to check some reputable travel guidebooks (usually R Steves is good but he doesn't "do" islands -- probably because his in-person tours are mainland). Go to library & take out BACK Editions of Rough Guide, LONely PLanet, Fodors, Eyewitness Greece etc. (The most recent editions are packed with color photos and hotel/restaurant reviews, and very short on destination background & ambience). The older editions are also more candid about drawbacks as well as highlights. You're going to spend $$$ on this trip, so it's worth doing homework not depending on online plugs or Eye Candy.

ITINERARY thoughts (1) 16 days is better - u can do this by flying out on a Thurs afternoon, Returning on the 3rd Sunday. NOTE: in planning you can only count Arrival day as half-day, IF you arrive before noon, and not count DEP day at all. (2) Do Athens LAST -- it's most transit & time-efficient, and also, you get over jet-lag in a slower-paced place, a lovely isle, AND island-time makes you savvy about Greek history & Greek ways, so that in Athens you navigate better, and appreciate its treasures more. (3) you need to be very strategic to be transport-efficient... in order to spend Least time getttng to/from places and Most time onsite, enjoying. So look at MAP, and use Ferry websites like Openseas (current skeds for this summer will show usual links). Plan a route that gets u to isle #1 on arrival day, and final island has flight or 2-hr ferry back to Athens/Pireaus.

ISLE OPINIONS (just personal, but based on 13 Greece visits) SANTORINI - Massively impacted by megacruiser crowd Plus plane-ferry tour groups; fewest ships on weekends, so best bet to come in Th or Fri, leave by Monday; it's mainly about The Famous Caldera View, so can be appreciated in 48-72 hrs; MILOS - once less-visited now "discovered"; lots of beaches but bad local transit, requires car rental; not big on Quaint Villages PAROS & NAXOS - Choose one, stay longer -- Naxos larger, more dramatic scenery & hillside villages. as an Alternative to Milos consider SIFNOS... glorious beaches, hillside towns, walking trailing, boating, history - and because no airport, fewer big ferries not yet invade by mass tourism.

POSSIBLE SEQUENCE? ARR BEfore NOON on a FRIDAY - Get 2pm Flight to SANTORINI - Stay F-Sa-Su Monday Ferry to NAXOS; stay NAXOS M- Fr ; on Sat ferry to SIFNOS for Sat - Wed Aft. ferry ATHENS Wnight - Th - F- Sat. Sunday: homebound flight - Do NOT sked before 10 am or u will have to get up TOOO early to get in line at airport.

Every island hop eats up half a day when you are ferry hopping. Less hope gives you much more actual island time. More Island time allows you to get into Greek mode, slow down, relax fully experience the culture.
We love Naxos and after 15 visits always spend a minimum of two weeks there. So much to see and do.

Naxos and Paros are good companion islands. Similar in many ways but different. And they are just an hour apart by ferry.
Bonus there are excursion ships from Naxos that stop in Paros and go to Santorini. You get to experience Santorini without having to pay the very high accommodation costs.

Athens should be done last not first. It can be overwhelming. Get to your first island on day of arrival. Get over jet lag, enjoy your islands. Get to Athens a few days before your return flight. It is best to be on the mainland at least a day before your return flight. Stuff can happen.

Thanks for the replies! Everyone’s insight is so appreciated! Day trips sound better so there’s less packing and more relaxing! In response to Janet we can probably do the last week of June, I’m a teacher and don’t end til usually 6/20 ish. So changing it to late June could definitely work!

So glad you can move it back... pack the weekend before, and aim to leave 1-2 days after school's out! (you can come back later & clean out your room). And I totally go with Stanbr on the DAY trip to Santorini, if what you really want is a quick look -- and be able to tell friends YES I saw Santorini! There are TWO v essels that make the day excursion -- b est one is MV Alexander, larger, & smoother ride.

You could do something similar to our trip:

Arrive Athens, drive to Delphi
Drive to Meteora
Drive to Piraeus, ferry to Sifnos
Ferry to Milos
Fly to Athens
Depart from Athens

We loved Sifnos (for all the reasons @Janet provided plus great food!). Would happily return. Milos is beautiful but much more touristy and, for us, felt unwelcoming. We would not go back there. Meteora is spectacular. And, as recommended by others, finishing up in Athens works well. Have a great celebratory trip!

I’ll admit I’m not a fan of a day trip as a way to visit Santorini. Yes, it is crowded and expensive but it’s also an amazing sight. So I’d keep 2-3 nights on Santorini as Janet suggested. And study all the hints from people on this forum for ways to maximize your experience.

Then I’d propose a ferry to the island of Amorgos … an off-the-radar island that would provide a peaceful experience after busy Santorini. It has 2 ports — Katapola and Aegiali — both have their fans on this forum. We stayed in Katapola and loved it. Just to tempt you, check out Porto Katapola, a small hotel right on the harbor, with huge balconies overlooking the water, at a small fraction of Santorini prices. Amorgos has fabulous restaurants you can walk to … the amazing Hozoviotissa monastery you can visit via bus, or rent a car for a day. Plenty of lovely little hikes you can take.

After 3 nights on Amorgos, it’s a very short ferry ride to Naxos, where you can experience another unique island. Ending your island hopping on Naxos allows you to either fly (40 minutes) or ferry (4+ hours) back to Athens.

You have lots of choices to make, and you are smart to have started your planning so far in advance. Whatever you choose, I’m sure you’ll have a memorable trip.

I also love Amorgos, but not a fan of Katapola, although it has more ferry service. I adore Aegali, such a beautful beach, not yet overbuilt ... and one can hike up to 2 lovely villeges on the hillside above, a tavernaa ?Nikolas? has terrace for unforgettable sunset. The last bus downhill is about 9 pm, so you'd need to watch the clock... or book som ekind of driver. Aegali has a great rustic place Pensioin Askas ... a cafe that gets mildly rowdy at night. Amorgos is so soothing that 3 days there can feel like a week elsewhere. Of course, the same can be said for sifnos. Funny how lack of airport and cruise-berthing eliminates crowds!

Amorgos is a lovely Greek Island, still not over run by hordes of tourists.

It's one of my top three favorite Greek Islands.

Stayed in Katapola and found the town to be lovely with more than enough services to keep me happy.

Not really a beach town but a good base to explore the island.

Check out my photos of Amorgos:
