Island to pair with Milos

I have been reading the accounts of getting to Greece and am now considering going in August. Not the best time I know but it is then or not at all.

We were in Greece in 2018 and several people told us that their favorite island was Milos. . I had thought of pairing Serifos with Milos but there are not many places to stay available at this late date. In 2018 we were in Santorini and Naxos.

What would you suggest? I am looking for something different than Milos that has an easy ferry connection from it.

Sifnos is a wonderful Greek Island. We combined Sifnos with Milos for an mid-October stay a number of years ago.

Sifnos has more to offer, more villages but Milos has the better beaches and the fantastically colorful fishing village of Klima.

Aegean Thesaurus is a wonderful travel agency is you need one. They will work with you on any budget and take care of everything if you want a stress-free trip.

Many others book their own trips but Aegean Thesaurus is highly recommended if you need an agency.

Was just going to say what Tommy said ... Sifnos is a gem. I stay up on the hilside, with a view out across a valley to other hills and out to sea. My secret gem is Nikoleta's APts. She has 2-3 of these, vine-covered front patios, little breakfast-corner in main room, comfy beds... and she is adorable. https://gerontisifnos.gr/en/home/ Tell her Janet From Philly sent you... I have watched her son grow up, adorable family; husband has a taxi... she'll gift you tomatoes from her garden out front.

If these 3 are taken, she also now runs her parents Geronti pension right next door, 4 rooms or so on a loooong shared balcony-patio with same view. https://www.thesaurus.gr/hotels/sifnos/apollonia/geronti_pension/geronti_pension.php If all these are full, the Aegean Thesaurus agency is Marvelous -- It started on Sifnos, now covers all greece, but still maintains office right at port. Check its website -- you can sort its accoms by town AND by price. They have a lot of cute "mom & pop" pvt apartments up in the hills, that don't have websites, because they don't want the fuss & don't speak much english; only work thru Thesaurus. I found a couple of great ones like this for a couple last year.

For swims, Take good bus service down to the beaches (I favor Vathy or Platy Gialos, I think Faros has brown sand, not my fave)... nightlife up in appollonia is vibrant.... good music, chic people. Kamares, the port town has lots going on of an evening.... you could take the bus down there, and taxi back uphill at bedtime. Some people (mostly Brits) seem to like staying there, but the ONE road to everywhere is always filled with traffic, and I think the beach is meh... too close to ferry pier. Kamares faces west for sunset, but is wedged in the fork between 2 very high hills, so always feels closed=in to me. Just my opinion. Good luck!

You may want to rent a car for 1 day to zoom around everywhre... lots of good hiking, but in August you'd have to do it 7 am or so...( Beth, why August??)

Thanks to both for the ideas.

And why August? Because I can which may not be a good enough reason, I know. Greece will let us in with proof of vaccination which at this point in time is tempting. My work prevents me from going when it would be cooler in the fall.

But might wait till next year.

Beth I think in 2018 you went in the late spring, or June? And wasn't that the BEST?!! Frankly I think it wold be worth the wait ... when it's SO hot, y ou lose a lot of "Greece time" just by being force t o hide in the A/C from 1 - 6.

Janet,
We were on the islands the last week of May which was perfect. We hit hot weather in Nafplio and Athens and it was mid 90s for the whole week. In Nafplio, we got up early (climbed the steps to the fortress at 7:30 am!) and went sightseeing in the morning and to a beach in the afternoon. In Athens, we went to museums in the afternoon. Only one day in Athens did we seek refuge in our air conditioned place and that wasn't until 4 pm.

So I see average temperatures on Serifos and Milos in August are 83/84 degrees which combined with low humidity seems doable. But perhaps the reality is not reflected in those averages?

Perhaps late August would be more like that. Anecdotal evidence (and some temp charts) seem to show that the very hottest part of the summer is Mid-July thru early August. Y ou should also be aware that each week surrounding August 15 is the Peak season because that's the BIG Holiday for Greeks (2nd in Year, topped only by Easter) -- this is the time THEY leave home & pour out to the islands with families.

I did an island hop trip a few years ago, in July. It was great - went from Santorini to Folegandros to Milos to Sifnos. The same daily ferry did the route, every few days I hopped on and went to the next island. I really did love Milos but also loved both Sifnos and Folegandros.

Here are my photos of those islands: http://andiamo.zenfolio.com/p437403546

Here's a link to my trip report from that trip which includes where I stayed: https://andiamo.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/11/greek-island-hopping-2018-part-2-milos-sifnos-and-folegandros

Janet-I was thinking of being on the islands the week before August 15. Probably not a good idea, as you say. I had forgotten about that.

Isabel-your pictures are wonderful and I so enjoyed your trip report. It was very balanced and thus very helpful as well as interesting.
