So my head is spinning trying to find the best option for an island day trip. Staying in Athens for a few days. Planning 2 days to wander around Acropolis and Plaka area but would like to experience and island for a day trip. Just want to see some beautiful water, a charming port to wander and shop, have a nice lunch etc. originally thought Poros but after watching some videos of the port changed our minds. Have read mixed reviews on Hydra. We will be there first week in May so assuming will be too chilly for beach and swimming. Would very much appreciate any opinions and suggestions.
Aegina is an easy ferry trip from Piraeus.
It was around 45 minutes when I took the trip.
I thought the port area was attractive. I'm a photographer and spent several hours there with my camera.
When I visited in June 2022, it was bustling and appeared to have plenty of places to get food or drink.
I stayed for a couple of days in another part of the island - Ag. Marina - so I cannot give any educated recommendation for dining/drinking in the port area.
Maybe others here can chime in on that.
I can tell you to get pistachios there, if you enjoy that nut. They are different than what's available in the US, but I REALLY liked those that are grown on the island. I wish I'd gotten more of them, as the cost elsewhere in Greece for Aegina-produced pistachios was double to triple what I spent on this island.
First week of May 2024: Greek Orthodox Easter.
Lots of people on ferries.
May 3, 4, 5 and 6 are public holidays.
Archaeological sites and museums generally close earlier on Saturday and are closed on Easter Monday
