Is 80 minutes layover enough to catch flight to Santorini?

Hello, All,

My flight from JFK is scheduled to arrive Athens at 10:00 am on 4/21/19. I did research online and booked my flight from ATH to Santorini at 12:05 pm on the same day. This will give me about two hours layover time. But now I received an email from Volotea airline to notify me that the flight schedule is changed from 12:05 pm to 11:25 am. So I will have only 85 minutes instead of 120 minutes layover time. I sent a message via the airline online form about 10 days ago but i have not received any reply yet. I was wondering if 80 minutes is enough to catch the next flight to Santorini at 11:25 am. What should i do for plan B? I have already reserved hotels at Santorini.

BTW, we plan to only take carry-on, no checked bags.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

That is so maddening when an airline changes your flight time. Volotea did that to us with a flight change to six hours earlier. It was OK for us but can cause problems. Athens airport is one terminal which helps and I remember that immigration was fast last time we landed there. Good luck and I hope Volotea puts you on a later flight with another airline.

I’m assuming these are two separate bookings and that the flight from JFK to Athens is direct. You’ll clear immigration in Athens. You then go one flight up or down (can’t remember which) to check in for your Volotea flight. Your time is short. In your favor is, in our experience, immigration in Athens was fast. A flight delay arriving in Athens or a very long deplaning could squeeze your time. And you need to check when check in for your Volotea flight closes (it used to be 30 minutes). If you miss the flight you’ll lose your money but flights are not all that expensive if you have to re-book. Check with Volotea and see if they will allow you to change to a later flight. Best to call.

You go up. And then go left if you do not need to check in luggage.

I scheduled my husband and son’s flights that close after their arrival at Athens airport. I was already there (came in on an earlier flight from Samos) and scooped it out. They even had to check luggage but I knew exactly where to go. We then went through security which took minutes and even had time to buy something for lunch.

It worked out great for us. I did it because I really didn’t want to wait for the next plane, especially I already was there two hours before my family arrived.

We were on Aegean and I had bought the flex tickets in case it had not worked out well.

It will be tight. You have 65 minutes from scheduled arrival to when you must be sitting on the plane to Santorini.

This from the Volotea site-

"Boarding gate
At Italian and Greek airports, boarding begins 40 minutes before your flight departure and ends 20 minutes before

https://support.volotea.com/customer/en/portal/articles/1211151-when-should-i-arrive-at-the-airport-

As for plan B, there are a number of later flights to the Island so you should be able to use your hotel reservation.

Its a very short time frame. You also have to keep in mind that the aircraft is not at the gate it is parked away from the terminal. You are taken to the airplane by bus thus the 20 minute cut off before boarding. You can't rush up the ramp at the last second.
I'd book a later flight.

Thank you all for replying. I appreciated.

I understand that 80 minutes layover time is very tight and also the immigration in Athens was fast. Should I book a later flight in advance or I buy a later flight after I arrive Athens and can’t catch the 11:25 am flight?

Thanks

If you buy it now you can almost certainly get it for a lower price than a walk up ticket. The other consideration is buying it now means you have a flight out that day. And it saves you the worry during the 10 hr flight of 'will I make it?'

If you miss you flight and have to buy a walk up ticket, there is no guarantee there will be seats available. And the larger your party the less the odds favor you of having seats for everyone.

Betting on a big boost from the jet stream and arriving 2 hrs early is not a good idea.

The situation in this report is a rarity--

Those morning flights from N. America (AA, Delta, Canada air) do not vary much at all... often they take off late, but have all that time over the Atlantic to catch up to schedule... but they don't arrive early. And with 400 people on board, do not underestimate the time it just takes to struggle out of the darn plane.
