In-person guide for the Acropolis - May 21, 2026

We are an active American retired couple looking for an in-person guide for the Acropolis on May 21, 2026, Thursday. Does anyone have a tried and true? (I do see other guide requests - mine is specifically for the Acropolis.)

FYI, the next day we are signed up for "Philosophy and Democracy tour of Athens" found on Trip Advisor that will take us to other historical sites. I am trying to get my dear husband more interested in travel and the chance to learn seems to be the best way :-)
This could be the start of something!

Many thanks,
Jane

Hello, Jane. For the Acropolis I feel the most important element is timing. You need to be there when it first opens. The crowds will overwhelm even the most enthusiastic travelers as the day progresses. If you want him to enjoy the experience watch your timing.

Here is my only concern about the guides. Many of them want to stand at the entrance and talk at the group while hundreds of others pass by and go up to the Acropolis. That or they stand blocking parts of the paths or stairs while talking to their groups. In my mind, the ideal guide would let you go directly to the top as soon as the complex opens. They would talk to you there and then give commentary where needed on the way down vs. the way up.

The Acropolis Museum goes a long way to helping to understand the history and importance of the Acropolis. It is a great addition to any visit.

Faye Giorgiou is amazing! She led our group of 12 (2 families) on a 4-hour tour of the Acropolis and the museum and kept everyone interested and entertained, even the teenagers. Highly recommend!

Since Faye Georgiou is SO much in Demand, she may already be booked for Your date. Despair not! The best-regarded GROUP tour agency for Athens is Athens-Walks... but they ALSO provide personal tours w a licensed guide at a time you specify. DO take Carol seriously ... it is VERY important, if going in the AM, to beat the huge throngs ... you need to get in at 8 AM or 8:15 if possible, if any slots are left... because about 9 am all the tour ageny groups pour in, PLUS huge groups from Cruises.

If no slots left, early enough to beat the crowds, try a reverse strategy -- look for entry slots about 4 pm, when numbers dwindle ... Acropolis is open until 8 (they start pushing u out about 7:30). In that case, you could go in the AM to the Acropolis Museum, and see the artworks & treasures first.

PS: for light meal before or after your Acropolis visit, the Museum has a great glassed-in terrace cafe, where you can look up at Parthenon while you snack ... good prices too, AND you can visit cafe even without buying ticket for museum.

If you haven't already secured an entry time, you might be able to use Athens-Walks services -- you could email them & say you want their pvt guide service at Acrop for 2 hrs ... and say u dont have entry times yet, could they handle it? FIrst pref, 8 or 8:15, or if not available, then 4 pm. Won't hurt to ask .. they have good service reputation..

Thank you, all three, for spot-on replies! Timing is absolutely essential - great advice. I have heard of Faye before - of Rick Steve's fame and will attempt booking her. Thanks also for the agency recommendation. Keeping all three things in mind, we'll work it out!

Thanks again,
Jane

Our experience was that going to the Acropolis at opening was a mosh pit. When we return in May, we plan to go late afternoon. Good luck!

Thanks for the response on evening vs morning. Good to consider.

FYI to all: It’s proving difficult to get tickets: HH ticket.gr gives a message that “e-ticketing is not available for this specific selection”.
I was there last year in early April with a girlfriend — no guide and it was easy to get tickets. Timing is everything!

HH ticket.gr displays a message stating that “e-ticketing is not
available for this specific selection”.

Tickets from April 1st (summer rate) will be available in a few days.

I am thrilled to let all of you know that Faye has responded with a ‘yes’ for our date, in the late afternoon. Couldn’t ask for more! It’s all falling into place and my husband is super engaged.
I’ll be checking tickets on Apri 1st!

Thank you for your help!!

Thank you for the info on purchasing the Acropolis tickets. I have been looking for weeks on the official site and it has not been possible to buy them. Is it correct they plan to start selling them on April 1? I went 2 years ago and had the 9:00 slot, unknowing about the crowds. Yes, first entrance would be better because you don't have a mob of people in your photos. It was very hot when I was there the first of June, so another reason to try to get in early.

Back again. I could not get tickets for May.
The first of the month seems to be key to opening that month only. That is, on April 1st, at approx. 7 am Greek time, I saw many time slots for April. However, when I selected any date in May (i tested many...), i got the message, "e-Ticketing service is not available for this specific selection."

Note: I started checking at about 10 pm MDT on Mar 31 which is 7 am in Athens. (Check the time conversion for your time zone. I use https://www.worldtimebuddy.com/).

Tenacious Jane...

Advice #1: Start adapting to Greece: no rush, no hurry, just take a deep breath.

Advice #2: No need to worry, tickets for May will be available soon.

Tip: May 1st is a public holiday, you can try as many times as you want; the sites and museums will be closed .

LOL. Thanks for the tip of May 1 being a holiday, JoLui.
I lived in Italy for 13 years and have to calm my kids when they get frustrated with a different kind of efficiency -- I get it.

For others looking to get hhticket.gr tickets: They are available online from the start of month in which you are looking to book... unless it's a holiday :-)

If it’s the same as previous years all of the summer months will be released during April.

Not sure how much this helps, but April tickets for the Acropolis were not released for sale until March 27th. I kept repeating the search until it went live, which I was told to expect toward the end of March.

I also have heard wonderful things about Faye Georgiou. Sadly, there is only one of her and her time fills up quickly. If she is not available, she has recommended Filippos Kanakaris, [email protected], who also does tours for Rick Steves' s organization.

Follow up on Acropolis ticket sales:
I have continued to periodically check https://hhticket.gr for the Acropolis & Slopes tickets for 21 May 2026. Yesterday, 20 May, I was able to reserve the time needed for our visit with Faye and have the tickets!

I am not sure exactly when they became available, but they definitely seem to be released on a rolling month basis. I'm super pleased!

I still owe you all an update on our tour with Fayej Georgiou. She will meet us after guiding a Rick Steves office group and provide a 3-1/2 to 4 hours approx guided visit of the New Acropolis museum and the Acropolis hill monuments leaving us on the top of the hill.
"On the way I will talk about the surrounding hills Pnyx Philoppapos and Mars ones as well as about the ancient Greek Agora located on the lower plateau".
We are looking forward to a special day!

I see that for May, you cannot buy ticket on May 18. Is that because it is Free Museum day so there is no need to buy a ticket for the Acropolis ?

Yes, it's a free day, so there will probably be a lot of people.

We are looking for an in person guide on May 20 or 21. Do you reserve your own tickets for Acropolis or does the guide do that?

Is the charge for each person if there are two of us?

Is there a guide y ou recommend?
thanks for an input

Usually, you're responsible for buying your own tickets, but the guide can arrange this for you.
The guide's fee covers the entire group, but this should always be confirmed with the guide directly.

And it goes without saying that this rule doesn't apply if you book through a third-party website (GetYourGuide, Viator, etc.) which can charge you extra for whatever they want.

A list of licensed guides with their direct contact information is available below:
