I was concerned about the number of immigrant that have come to Greece. Was that ever a problem?
No. Our Rick Steves tour was wonderful and Greece beautiful. Her citizens are wonderfully welcoming and the food the best anywhere.
Ditto Andi's response.
Melva, Charlotte NC is named after a queen of another country. Everyone in the crown colonies was an immigrant.
I happen to be a quite tired of these posts about immigrants myself, but the OP has a right to ask the question without being jumped on. I think Andi's answer was a good one and if nobody else posted or if all add'l posts were just "ditto", maybe the point would be made without making assumptions about the OP's intentions.
This post presents a chance to educate vs a chance to be snarky. Thanks to those who chose the former.
Sadly, when one sees video reports, a gathering of a few score can look like thousands and give a truly inaccurate impression of what the reality is.
Was that ever a problem?
I suspect the answer is something along the lines of , "not since the Nazi' occupation"
We were in naxos and mykonos last september.. we saw no immigrants.. or I should say i couldnt tell who was an immigrant and who wasnt..
There were no issues.
Our news media and stories are about immigrants, their problems traveling and my Dr., who is Greek said that when he was visiting Greece he saw hundreds walk along the beach in black burkas, so from my U.S viewpoint from the news, we see Europe overrun with immigrants, boat people, people capsizing and trying to find a life again.
My heart is with them and I hope we can be more compassionate here (the US) and take more people. Our nation is a nation of immigrants. Unfortunately, our President is a .........., and I look to the day when he is gone for office and hope we have a more intelligent and compassionate leader in office.
I'm not trying to be negative, I'm trying to be informed. I'm a traveler but have never been to Greece, so I look to you all for intelligent and informative answers, not the knee jerk, biased stuff that I hear in the news every day.
Melva - I was concerned about how the "immigrants" would affect our 2015 trip to Germany and Vienna. I regret that I spent any energy worrying about what turned out to be a non-issue. The immigrants aren't there to see the sights of interest to American tourists.
Your concern doesn't make you a bad person - just an honest one. But "immigrants" are working too hard for bread to be interested in our cake.
I was on the 2016 Greece Tour. I would have never known there were issues. Our guide was Greek. She talked about it several times throughout the tour in a very compassionate way.
Are you as concerned about the number of immigrants arriving in Greece as the number of immigrants arriving in the US or are you talking about the refugees coming to Greece to escape war, political & social injustice?
If you are talking about the refugee situation you'll have nothing to worry about.
I was on the island of Chios last October. Chios, along with Samos, Lesvos and some other islands have been the islands refugees have landed on, mostly arriving from Turkey.
I saw the refugee camp in Chios Town. It was in an out of the way area. I walked up to the camp entrance and met some of the refugees. They were polite and non-threatening.
In fact, many refugees walked freely around the town, were never bothered by locals and appeared to be as safe and secure as I was.
Don't let the media who sensationalize everything scare you. The immigrant/refugee "problem" is created by bigots, racists and haters.
There are a few refugee and migrant entry points in Greece. I am sure if you stay in the tourist areas and use common sense, you will not encounter any problems.
Another consideration: if you might be traveling to one of the camp/entry points such as Lesbos, there may be volunteer opportunities if you are interested.
Thanks for you reply's. I was not using immigrant as a negative term but was concerned about the situation with so many people coming into your country and other countries. I suppose I should have used refugee. I was concerned because of the message that the media paints. It's all a sad situation for the refugees and I'm hoping our country will open up to bringing in more people. Yes, the news presents a message of "fear."
