What are your RECENT experiences with NEEDING a IDP (international driving permit ) in Greece.
Either for rental car or in case of an accident/ticket/police encounter. The WWW is very unclear on this requirement.
Thank you
Last year the Greek government stated a IDP was no longer needed just your local driver's license.
However, some more rural areas of the country could be a different story.
I bought one for last year's trip and the rental agency said I didn't need one.
I contacted the same agency for this year's trip and they said I didn't need one once again.
For the low cost of a IDP it may be a good idea and have piece of mind knowing you have your local license and IDP on hand.
You could contact the car rental agency to ask them what they recommend.
US citizens do not need the IDP any longer. Actually on one of our trips we were stopped at a Police road block and told my wife now for the first time we can use the IDP. No way, the officer just pushed it away and said Passport.
We have a friend who owns a car rental company he confirms you do not need the IDP any more, just you home state licence.
My daughter just returned from Greece. No IDP needed.
The real advantage of an IDP is that it provides a translation of your driver’s licence conditions and validity should it be required when English is not spoken. They are cheap and easy to get and if problems were to arise would save a lot of time and trouble.
The Greek law which authorizes drivers from the USA, Canada and Australia to drive with the license of their country of origin dates from November 2021 (Article 94 of Greek Law 4850/2021)
It specifies that are authorized to drive: holders of a valid driver's license for motorcycles and passenger cars during their stay in Greece, and whose driver's license was issued by the United States of America or Canada or the United Kingdom or the Commonwealth of America and Gibraltar.
