What are the must dos/must sees in Katakolon or within driving distance. This is a cruise stop so we only have a day. Thanks so very much for any insights.
If I am remembering correctly, you can go to Olympia from Katakalon by train, very cheaply. We just stayed in the town, shopped, had lunch and admired a local bride and her party as they entered the town church cruisecritic.com has a section on Med. ports where you will get some info. Your cruise director should help you, too, though his/her main interest will be to sell the ship excursions.

Thank your for your ideas.
I'll be there again for a day on a cruise in June, and plan to spend it the same way as the first time but maybe without a wedding to watch. Olympia doesn't interest me for some reason but I'll research it again to make sure. It is cheap and easy to get there by train, and the train station is just at one end of the town, a short walk.
There are no must-see sights in Katakolon. It is a small tourist village serving cruisers. Take the train to Olympia and tour one of the best ancient sights in all of Greece--this is truly a must-see destination. Don't bother with an expensive cruise ship package tour--it's easy to do this on your own.
How often does the train go? We are also doing a cruise stop there in Julu. There's always that worry about getting back on time.
Last year, the trains were leaving Katakolo at 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, and 13:15, and returning from Olympia at 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, and 15:45. Check on cruisecritic.com before you go to see if a cruiser has posted different hours for 2014.
