Hi I am interested in everyone's thoughts.. We are planning a 2 night stay in either Hydra or Aegina June 2026. I chose those 2 islands due to their close proximity to Athens.
We will be on a cruise for a week, ending in Athens, and I was thinking about a cruise extension to one of those two islands.
I appreciate your input. Thanks, Doreen
Have never been to Hydra but have gone to Aegina three out of the last four years. We really like it but it is not super touristy - there are some attractions such as the Temple of Aphaia and the Orthodox Cathedral but it is a pretty low key place. It is also hard to get around without a car.
We stay in Agia Marina on the east side of the island and usually do one trip or hike somewhere on the island and then just hang out by the water each day. It is about an hour and a quarter by ferry from Athens or about 45 minutes by the high speed boat.
Both islands would be worthy of a stay.
However, Aegina is closer, larger and has more to do and see.
One of the best preserved temples in Greece, abandoned Byzantine Village in the hills, beaches, seaside villages, etc.
Hydra has one of Greece's prettiest waterfront with the village cascading down to the harbor.
Not really known for its beaches or archeological/history sites and the best thing no motor vehicles allowed on the island so you won't be dodging cars/motorcycles just lots of tourists.
More of a place to hang out, people watch and check out the jet setters.
The back streets up hill are quieter and more relaxing.
I've been to both but if you want more options then Aegina would be my choice.
If at all possible avoid weekends for both islands.
