We have a cruise stop in Patmos. My husband uses a cane to walk. My thought is to get a private taxi vs. joining a tour so that we can go at our own pace. How strenuous is it to visit the cathedral and the cave? Are there a lot of steps to access the church? Are the steps steep? How difficult is navigating the cave? Please advise. Thank you.
Great question for your cruise director. It's been 10 years but I remember a hike and then I think a few stairs down into the cave which was like a large room but that was it. Worth a visit. Google 'Cave of the Apocalypse' for a better description than my memory.
It's been about 18 years since I've been there, but I don't remember the cave and church being difficult to visit. If you google "cave of the apocalypse Patmos" there are YouTube videos to show you what to expect.
We spent a week on the island and took a taxi up to the monastery. The only difficult part I remember was figuring out how to get back to our hotel near the harbor. A school bus actually stopped and offered us a ride! I remember everything about Patmos felt magical.
Thank you very much! I saw a YouTube video, and it looked like the church had stairs but the clip was short and I couldn't tell how many or how steep.
