Hello friends of Rick. My wife and I make our first visit to Greece in early May. We'll spend three nights in Nafplio, driving to sights from there. Can anyone recommend places to stay in Nafplio? Thanks, in advance, for any guidance you can provide. Tom
We stayed at Pension Marianna during our Rick Steves tour several years ago and loved it! Our room had the bed built into the castle wall.
We have stayed at Pension Marianna twice several nights each. Very highly recommended. Before you go, get/print a good map of that area as the main parking area is accessed from town using a not obvious route. That parking is often crowded, maybe full. Our alternate parking is near the harbor in the free lot or along the access road near Staikopoulos(?) park (both a walk and stairs).
THe VERY best website (noncommercial) is http://www.visitnafplio.com/ -- written by a wonderful scandinavian expat who's lived in Nafplio for 25+uears == recommends Hotel Agamemnon -- which (altho moderate rates) has THE best location along the seafront... the only hotel with clear view of sea, no tavernas in front... However, not easy to book due to the enthusaistic recommends by us .. if it's booked, look at Omorfo Poli... also near the sea, on the level, good balconies, family-rrun. Mariannaa has been over-plugged because of STeves Group tours It's way high up on stairstep streets & that's ok if you are with a group & a mini=buss is parked nearby.... but not so much fun if you get down into Old Town and realize you forgot your sunglasses or billfolld. Think about Location - location - location.
If you are open to staying in an apartment, our friends had a lovely 3-night stay here:
It is a very nice one-bedroom apartment right on the harbor, modern, washing machine, excellent and responsive host.
We stayed separately in a different apartment that trip and I can't recommend it. The drains were all closed when we arrived, and we found out why the next morning after we opened them -- giant cockroaches had emerged during the night. Ugh!!
We stayed in Amymone and Adiandi two years ago and really enjoyed it. It was about a two block walk from central parking in a great location. Breakfast was good and pretty extensive. You could eat either inside the restaurant or outside with a water view. I believe we stayed in the Amymone part which was across the street from the check-in. The only caveat is if you have any mobility issues I would not recommend. There were a LOT of stairs to our room and they were fairly steep. Fine for us, but I could see this being a problem.
Thank you for the input. This forum is an invaluable resource as we plan our annual European adventures. Tom
Check the Hotel Aetoma in Nafplio. It was among the best accommodations we have had in years of travel..large room, excellent, large breakfast and perhaps the kindest, most helpful and caring hosts ever. I believe parking was available but not certain. It has excellent reviews yet on booking, com.and is quite reasonably priced. You won’t be disappointed I’m sure.
We stayed at the Omorfi Poli at Janet's suggestion, and we loved our stay here. It's very centrally located in the pedestrianized zone, and we walked everywhere. The outdoor patio where we had breakfast every morning is very pretty and pleasant. We parked our car in the very large community parking lot. It's a quick walk to the lot, and we always found a parking space.
Just as an FYI, I am trying to book three nights for Easter week and having a tough time even getting responses on email from Eleni, Marianna (contacted twice), Rigas and Omorfi (whose site is currently under maintenance and Booking.com says not accepting reservations there).
Thank you, once again, for the suggestions. All properties were appealing. However, at this late date, the hotels within the city center were either fully booked or requiring a minimum five day stay. We only have three days remaining before our return to the states so we found a hotel outside of old town. Tom
No worries amy, most of the time it's because they are closed and the owners are on vacation.
