We would like to travel to Greece in June and possibly overlapping into July. I am concerned about the heat. I do not do well outside in very hot weather. Should we forget going in the summer months? We are professors, so we don't have too many options for cooler weather.
As someone who does not do well in heat: forget about Greece in the summer. Highs in the 80’s and up.
May is a great month, also mid-September into early October. You don't have to take our word for it... you can research temps online.
very hot weather
What temp meets that criterion? A resident of Juneau probably has a different answer than one in Phoenix
May is a great time to visit Greece. We had very comfortable temps throughout most of our trip last May but it did start getting hot in Athens in late May.
What about spring break? I went on a trip in March when I was in college and the weather was lovely. Plus the flowers were starting to bloom
Based on what you described I would avoid until the shoulder season either before or after summer. It is very hot until end of september. My guess is if you don't like heat you won't enjoy the summer in Greece. IMHO
Another consideration is winter or spring time. The temperature is moderate and there are few tourists. I was there for several months in Dec - march on business and found it a lovely time although it does tend to rain at times. But it was great to go to the acropolis when no-one was around. Most of the tourist spots are choking with people in June/July
On June 30, the temperature in Athens typically ranges from 72°F to 89°F and is rarely below 66°F or above 96°F. Which means see the city in the morning, nap or find a bar mid-afternoon and enjoy the city again in the evening. But do go.
Just for perspective…. I live where it is hot in the summer. Do I like it? Not really. However, I was in Greece (including Athens) in July 2021 for 2 weeks because that is when my friend could go, as an educator. Was it hot? You betcha! But did we have a great time? Absolutely. We made sure to have air conditioned lodging and usually scheduled some afternoon time to go back and cool off. Also Greece is not uniformly the same temp, so some of the answer depends on where you go. And if you want to go and that is when you CAN go, you have to be the judge between going (and maybe going more slowly because of heat) or not going at all.
