Hora Sfakion (Sfakia), Crete, overnight parking

In early June, we're taking the ferry from Hora Sfakia to Loutro to stay overnight for one night. We'll have a rental car that we want to park overnight in Hora Sfakia. We are taking small luggage with us to Loutro and leaving nothing valuable in the car.

According to this map, it looks like there is a good amount of parking next to the ferry ticket booth (#26 is the dock, #24 is the ticket booth), and some additional parking around the new harbor:

If that area is full, it looks like there is parking up the hill, according to this view in Google Maps:

I read that there is secure parking somewhere in Hora Sfakia. Where would that be? Is that recommended or is the area safe in general for parking in any 'legal' location we can find?

We drove from Chania and parked in an unsecured lot near the ferry in Chora Skafion, no problems. You will love Loutro!!

In my experience, plenty of parking in Hora Sfakion and as you say, not leaving anything valuable in the car. In my 12 trips to greece renting cars in Peloponnese and in many islands, my companions & I have never even thought about "secure parking." This is not Naples or Sicily. Or the South Bronx.

Thanks Janet and Suki. That's very helpful. Sounds like we're good to go.

Just drive into Sfakia, as you enter the lower part of the village you will come to a big open car-park, there will be someone there to take your money (just a few Euros a day, not exorbitant), you can park either there in the big square, or continue down & left to go nearer the port. It's all the same. Pretty safe, but don't leave valuables showing & lock the car.
I'd suggest give yourselves some time before the ferry leaves to have a wander around Sfakia, nice cafes & an excellent bakery.

As I recall several years ago there was free parking at the lot everyone has described. On our last visit though there definitely was a fee for parking a jwugg noted.

There is free parking and also parking with a small charge of 3 euros a day. This was introduced by the mayor to help the local economy.
