I've never taken these buses, but I'll tell you what I think, since I see them traveling along Athens Avenues: That's basically what you'll be doing with these buses: traveling along Athens Avenues.

If that's what you want to do, fine. You'll see the Acropolis Hill from afar, a few other monuments from a distance, but the traffic from quite close up. You can easily do this by taking a public bus for €1.20.

To get even a close-up view of the monuments and sites, you'll have to walk, as most are in a fairly compact pedestrian zone.

The buses cant go to the historical centre. They tended to build the ancient buildings high up to annoy invading armies. The historic central area is best done on foot.

When ho-ho busses began in Athens... waaay back (2007?) I took one just for research purposes because in other European capitals they proved useful. In Athens one spends the entire time stuck in traffic in major aavenues, staring up at office buildings. The only reason I would do it at all, if the ticket is no more than €8, would to take it from the Lower Plaka area up to the National Archeological MUsuem and back... because then it would be about the same as 2 taxi rides. IF you look at a good detailed map of athens, you will see that, as others said, almost all major ancient anad/or relgious sites are clustered within walking distance, many on vehicle-free lanes. This is also a reason why "taxi tours" can be deceptive. Here's an online color map I recommend, for understanding the sites and sights -- http://www.orangesmile.com/destinations/img/athens-map-big.jpg
