High winds in Chania… indoor activities?

We will be staying on Crete (Iraklion 10-14 Oct and Chania 14-21 Oct). The forecast keeps changing, but at one point they were expecting high winds (gusts of 45 mph) during that timeframe. Currently, our plans are focused on exploring the ancient ruins, beaches, etc. on the island…basically outdoor activities. I would like to be prepared with a list of indoor activities just in case. Any recommendations? Thank you in advance!

Iraklion has a good archaeological museum.

On a trip to Crete long ago, I took a public bus into the mountains and enjoyed the scenery. You'd just need to check the return schedule to be sure you weren't stuck for too long at the turnaround point.

I'm a great believer in stopping at the local tourist office for informed suggestions about scenic side trips, new museums and special events. I also keep my eye out for posters about special exhibitions, even though I may not be able to read the words. I've been known to take a picture and ask an English-speaker what it's about.

The Wikipedia articles for the two cities will list points of interest, so they're worth skimming.

I don't know where you read that it was going to be windy in mid October. It is impossible to reliably forecast weather more than 3 or 4 days in advance.

If you want reliable forecasts for Chania go here:

That being said, a few 45mph gusts are not uncommon in the Greek islands. It can be annoying on the ferry and on the beaches but it doesn't really prevent you from going outside.
