Help me plan 6 nights on Rhodes please

I've gotten so much good info with my other questions, so I'm back for more help.

We arrive mid-day on Rhodes on 6 March and depart in the morning of 12 March.

I have lots of thoughts and have been reading guidebooks and travel sites. We're unsure of how we want to spend our time.

I'm thinking:
1st 3 nights in the Old Town or a hotel a short walk from the Old Town. That gives us the 1/2 day we arrive and 2 full days to explore.
4th & 5th night: Pick up a car on day 3 and drive down the coast to Lindos. I've been looking at info and I'm not sure if Lindos is right for us but maybe it's quiet and much less touristy since it's early March.
6th night: stay near the airport since we have a 9:30 flight, it looks like we could see a bit of the island once we leave Lindos and arrive at our lodging late afternoon before sunset

The other possibility is booking the entire trip in Rhodes town and just doing day trips. We not opposed to that but it is nice to linger into the evening in a new place.

We aren't resort people, just want nice places, hopefully with good breakfast and ideally family owned & run.

We just stayed in Rhodes Old Town last month on our first visit.

I think if you have a car you could easily stay in one spot and day trip. We hired a driver a couple of times and the roads seemed very good, if you are used to driving on the European side it will be easy.

I also had a yen to stay in Lindos but after spending time there, I am glad that I didn't. Most of the big hotels seemed actually a long way from Lindos, and Lindos itself looked very crowded, and this was the end of October. It was very pretty, much like Oia in Santorini. I am very glad to have visited and climbed the Acropolis, but a day trip was enough.

We stayed in Utopia Luxury Suites in the old town. We had a huge room, decorated in a medieval style, with a living area, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. There was a shared patio out the front, where we had a private table and chairs. We also had a private patio, with another table and chairs, out the back. This one had a hot tub.

It was definitely family owned, and they brought us the most incredible breakfasts every morning at the time we requested.

I highly recommend this hotel, which was also walkable to all shops, restaurants and bars, and the harbour, but was still relatively peaceful and away from the madding crowds.

The room on the start of their website is the actual room that we had.

Thanks DebH, the place you stayed looks lovely but if we stay in Rhodes the whole time, & get a car for part of it, I think we'd need to stay where we can easily park.

I've read mixed things about Lindos, we'd want to stay overnight mostly because we like to linger places and driving back in the evening means missing the scenery on the way back.

We just got notified that our non-stop flight from Heraklion to Rhodes has changed. The only viable choice now gets us into Rhodes 4 hours later, so we've lost that 1/2 day to explore the Old Town.

I'm also pondering doing something I don't love (but we do it anyway if it works out): Rhodes town for nights 1 - 4 (still getting the car for a day trip but maybe on the 4th day we're there, not the 3rd), drive to Lindos (unless we find somewhere else interesting) for day 5, spend the night and do some more exploring and overnight near the airport.

There is free parking outside of the Old Town. In May 2024, we rented our car in Rhodes town after 2 days in the Old Town. The rental proprietor showed us where the parking was.

You would probably rent from the airport, so you could drop off at the airport. I think the local auto rentals would have an additional charge to drop off at the airport. The airport is on the opposite side of the island from Lindos.

Except for Lindos, the other towns are small. Outside of Rhodes, most hotels are all-inclusive designed for Europeans. March should be too early in the season for cruise ships.

Lindos would be good for a day trip — you can hike up to the Acropolis on the hill for gorgeous views. I don’t think I’d stay overnight though.

Another day trip option would be taking the ferry to Symi, if it’s making same day return trips when you’re there. Approaching Symi on the ferry is incredibly photogenic— I think one of the most beautiful harbors in Greece.

Symi is a really great suggestion- we spent a week on Rhodes in 2019 and did a lovely day trip there. Agree the harbour is beautiful. We were mostly visiting for beach reasons but loved staying the whole week in the old town so we could spend every evening walking around the shops, bars, restaurants, etc. We especially loved Mevlana Cafe- in a building from the 14th century... felt like stepping back in time.

I don't think it's a good idea to stay even one night in Lindos, and it's not because you'd miss the scenery on the way back to Rhodes Town, because the "scenery" up to Rhodes Town consists largely of driving on a main road that passes through industrial and commercial areas.

Furthermore, the Lindos Archaeological Site closes at 3:30 PM in March. The small, traditional village of Lindos has only a few permanent residents; the activity is mainly tourist-oriented, with restaurants and shops selling trinkets and souvenirs (and a lot of vacation rentals). I don't know Lindos in March, but it's likely to be a ghost town after 4 PM.

Since you'll have a car, you can take the opportunity to see some less touristy places, but still worth seeing. You might find some ideas here:

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We have decided on staying in Rhodes town. Day trips should be just fine, we're in Greece for 7 weeks total so we will have lots of lingering in the evening in new places!

After a lot of research it seems we will be happy with how quiet Rhodes is in early March, despite the fact that hours for attractions may be shortened. I've booked a small hotel in the Old Town, a bit cozy for 6 nights but charming with great reviews

If you're renting the car from the airport, ask your accommodation where's the best place to park your car. Such as, ease of parking, closeness to the hotel, where to meet for luggage transport if offered. The cobbles in the Old Town are hard on rolling luggage.

I see you also got good advice on TripAdvisor. I followed it to be up to date before our arrival.

thanks Leonard. We always check cruise ship arrivals when we're doing a multi-day stay, so we can plan around the influx in popular places.

I think we will just rent a car for a day from a local place in Rhodes town, possibly two. The free parking just outside the Old Town walls is about a 5 minute walk from our hotel. As for luggage, we travel sort of light and I read our hotel (and others) uses a golf cart to meet guests at the gate. I think we'll add on having our hotel shuttle pick us up at the airport, easier than a taxi and a chance to chat with the staff.
