when renting a car, read about the laws/rules of the roads in greece, signage, insurance coverage, having a map and routes you're planning, parking areas may be slim pickens to stop for a photo shoot, if needing an IDP (aaa.com/AAA) for all drivers before flying to europe. many posts about driving & IDP, you can do a search on top of page with little magnifying glass
when are you planning this trip? santorini is on tourist overload, many cruise ships stop here, depending how many (could be 5-6 which means many thousands everyday. needing reservations for lunch or dinner since it will be packed worse than a can of sardines.
i have been there on a cruise & so glad i went but will never go again. taking a cable car up or walking up stairs/steps with the donkeys and donkey poo!! good luck and have a great time

Renting a car in Santorini is easy. You can just ask your hotel or walk into one of the many rental places on the island, you can't miss them. Go with local rental companies, there are plenty of them and they're reliable. There's no need to look for major chains like Avis, Hertz, and the like.
American driver's licenses have been accepted for renting a car and driving in Greece for four years now (the same goes for Canadians and Australians).
The only issue you might run into is that they might refuse a one-day rental during peak season. Also, during peak season, you can expect some parking hassles in Fira and Oia.
Thanks so much for your advices - But - I think we will try and find a private driver for at least 6 or 7 hours😬 for our once in a lifetime day🥳😎🚘
Any suggestions?
Again, Thanks for your help❣️
You can also ask your hotel to arrange a private driver for the day.
I don't have personal experience with these private driver services but you could check these ones out and ask for a personalized quote based on what you want to see and do.:

In my opinion, the hourly rate should be around €60, though it may vary depending on the season. And of course, that doesn't include a tip (if the driver is friendly) or any paid attractions.

getting off our cruise ship which was tendered, we walked some of the alleyways thru neighborhoods, seeing a church. stopped at a small mom & pop restaurant overlooking caldera away from the crowds, it was great with yummy food. walked thru some of the shops, my friend wanted a ceramic pot and ordered it to be shipped (took 4 months LOL) we laughed so much, then back down to cruise ship on the crowded cable car, it was a fun day then to corfu (one of my favorites) then to mykonos and crete.
go have a great time with your gang and hope you decide on a fabulous tour, enjoy
