I hope this will be a fun topic! What, in your opinion, are the best Greek Souvenirs? OF COURSE memories and time spent in a beautiful place, but if you had to think materially, what would it be for you?
My most favorite Greek Souvenir is the Grapes preserved in syrup. We had this first in Santorini in May 2024 at a local coffee shop which served this instead of sugar with our Greek coffee. It uses local white grapes and they have almost a caramel flavor, so delicious.
I had a chance to buy in Santorini and passed as I didn't want to carry it throughout our trip, thinking it would be easy to get in Athens where we finished the trip. Took a lot of effort to find a shop who had this in stock, bought 3 jars for myself and friends. I still enjoy mine today with my coffee.
For me- any Korres products. I know you can get these outside of Greece as well but I always bring quite a lot home with me. Beyond that- olive wood products (like cutting boards).
Jewelry. I have not taken off my Athena necklace in two years.
Olive wood kitchen utensils. I have a lemon reamer and a perforated spoon that I bought in the market at Chania and are used all the time.
My three favorites are worry beads with the evil eye symbol, an Athena gold charm, and a framed batik print that I bought from the artist on one of the islands.
I'm loving all these special items and the memories they hold for you! keep them coming!!
For me, an antique raw amber necklace from a tiny shop in Athens and a small, red pottery bowl from Sifnos. For gifts, worry beads, honey and ouzo.
Like Cat VH, all kinds of Korres products, shampoos, shower gels, a Komboloi to relax.
Aromatic herbs from the islands, from Karamantho's farm in Paros. https://kamarantho.gr/en/
and from Aegean Organics in Limnos. https://aegeanorganics.com/en/home/
Lots of t-shirts, and way too much money spent on clothes, especially at Harris Mitsiopoulos's Athens boutique. https://harrismitsiopoulos.com/
Hello travelers,
For me, it's fridge magnets... I have one saying "good morning" in Greek, one of the'evil eye' 👁️, also a ceramic head of the Greek philosophers... I'll purchase anything from an artisan. I also like to create my own necklace and stretch bracelet at this 'flea market' store in Athens and give as gifts.
I always look for olive wood pieces that I will use in my home, small knives, little boxes & bowls, small trays. But I happened upon another "theme" that has given me joy. I found an exquisite small clear-glass fish n a Nafplio craft shop (alas, fewer shops like thse today), and decided to find a "fish" for every island or key mainland place where I have stayed. Soon I had a shelf where swam a school of small fish -- fish of teak, of copper, of steel, one of burnt lava, a fish drawing on a smooth rock, a painted Fish shell .... each one calling up a memory, of Naxos, Sifnos, Mykonos, Antiparos, Samos, and many more.
I love this question! While I can’t say I have one clear favorite because it’s changed over the years….on my last trip I got a honey sampler in the airport (of all places). Let me tell you that many months later, probably the middle of winter, I opened each one and savored the beautiful scent of each and the delicate taste. I was incredibly sad when they ran out and am having difficulty finding through an online store. Hoping to find them again on my next trip, fingers crossed.
Such fun themes and surprising sources! This teaches me the heart wants what it wants (a school of fish), and fun things can come from unexpected places (the airport). Thank you for sharing your stories! This is making me excited to start another voyage and, hopefully, pick up some small treasures along the path.
A hand turned olive wood pen in an olive wood box found in a little shop in Monamvasis, strings of worry beads made from a variety of stones from a shop in Nafplio, fridge magnets that are mini white and blue Greek tiles, and various owl things.
Greek fisherman's cap.
I love the fish too. But my school of fish swim in strategic places on my (walks), walls between prints from our travels.
I have salmon from Alaska, sardines from Portugal, an octopus from the islands, a rainbow fish from Sicily, a scroll of fish from Tokyo, and a few odd ones from Croatia. They are ceramics, clay, wood, paper, and metal. We’ll be in Greece next year, gonna have to add to my collection. Maybe I’ll find one carved from olive wood.
Edited to add: a friend brought back an Icon of St. Barbara for me on his last trip. If you are religious these are beautiful.
I believe you meant on your walls, not your walks. isnt keyboarding frustrating! I wish you "happy fishing" in Greece!
We brought back worry beads and evil eye key chains that everyone loved.
Olive oil -- ask the vendor to pack it well to be put in your check-in luggage. I brought back the Governor olive oil from Corfu. It has one of the highest anti-oxidant levels in all olive oils. Here in the US, it's about US$80-90 per bottle, but I paid only 45Eur as I purchased it from their olive grove in Corfu.
Other favorites of mine -- Greek honey and spices.
Thank you everyone! I was going to try and do the 2.5 weeks with a carry-on, but now I'm reconsidering! :)
I selected "cat" socks made in Greece - abstract black cats on gray with eyes peering in all directions!
Hand sculpted fish from Apollonia in Sifnos and also from Folegandros. We’ve got a giant octopus from Sicily and a hand tooled cast iron salamander from La Paz hanging on our living room wall. Oh, and a wooden jaguar head from Tikal, and puffer fish carved from gourds and painted in multiple colors from Tulum.
Earrings with the "Eye of Naxos" shell from a tiny, local shop on the island.
My (tall) husband loves his linen shirts, and I always bring home a Xmas ornament from our travels…got a “tree-sized” eye.
I’ll tell you one thing we didn’t get…a penis-shaped anything! They were EVERYWHERE!
OP consider doing carry on only to Greece and then checking on way home. We bought wine and olive oil that could not go in carry on. Even so, we “had” to drink several bottles because we had bought too much wine even for that.
