Greek Itinary for end of June/Early July

I’ve really been editing my itinary and now I wanted to see what you think. I really want to go to Meteora, but I am realizing that might not be possible. Everything through my Santorini is booked and cannot he changed. Everything else is open. I really want to do it the Greek way by enjoying my time, but recent pictures of Meteora and how breathtaking it is has me wanted to go that way. Could I do a 1 day trip after Delphi and go see it? Any help is amazing.

Extra we are a 30 year old couple on our honeymoon. We are in good shape and we want to hike, see historical places and enjoy time on the beach. This is our first time to Greece.

—June 28 Fly into Athens from US and fly directly to Santorini. (Both flights are already booked) get into Santorini at 10:30pm
Stay in Santorini (Oia) for 3 nights leave July 1
—July 1 take a ferry to Naxos and stay in St George for 5 nights. (We will rent a car)
July 6th take an early flight to Athens and rent a car and go to Nafplio. Stay for 4 nights.
July 10th drive to Delphi and stay 1 night
July 11th head back to Athens and stay until July 16th then fly home.

Good work! you have done your research, listened to some "old hands", adapted your plan, no, backtracking, efficient transit choices, and a really sensible allocation of time ... A-Plus. As an old-timey retired editor I cannot resist one cx -- it's spelled itinerary. Have a wonderful honeymoon!

Oops! Didn’t mean to misspell that! It doesn’t seem to let me edit it either now. Haha
Janet, do you think there is a way to squeeze in Meteora?
Would it work to sneak in one night at Delphi, then one night to Meteora and then come back to Athens that way? It just seems so majestic. Or just save that place for another trip.... whenever that might be.

I would think you could add Meteora. By my counting, you have five nights in Athens. We had three nights (2.5 days) and saw a lot. My one son gave up one of our days in Athens to drive to Meteora and said it was fabulous.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful advice. Could we see Delphi in our way down from Meteora and then spend 2 nights in Meteora or should we spend 1 day in each?

We am getting so excited for our honeymoon!! :-)

Its a well thought out plan. I will make a couple of comments. You do not need a car while on Naxos at St George beach. Everything is within an easy walk as St George is part of Naxos town. A car is very convenient when you decide to explore the countryside and mountain villages but thats the only time where you are going to need the car.

If you drop a night or two from Athens you will have time to do Delphi and Meteora quite nicely. Depart Nafplio and make a stop at Corinth where you can visit Ancient Nemia (sister to Olympia games) and the stadium is still there. Perhaps stop at ancient Corinth as well. Both are tidy small sites that can easily be done in an hour or so.

You may notice I am suggesting that you take a leisurely drive to Delphi so you arrive later in the day. The reason is Delphi will be crowded with day trippers and tour buses. When you arrive later in the day those groups will be heading back to their buses and the area will be peaceful. Take this opportunity to visit the Museum which will set you up for your visit the next morning to the site. There is a lower excavation that has no gate so you can also visit this area that afternoon and evening. Find a hotel, preferably one with views down the mountainside to the Gulf of Corinth. This area is full of olive trees and the views seem like a Green river flowing all the way to the coast.
Next morning get to the site at opening. You will have it basically to yourselves for about 2 hours before the day tour buses arrive. By then you will be high up in the site and will have anther hour before the crowds catch up to you. This is a good time to leave. Pick up your car and drive to Meteora. Perhaps you should program your GPS for Kastraki or Kalambacka. Our GPS didn't realize there are 7 places in Greek mainland called Metoria. Long story.
Use the same strategy as Delphi arrive in the later afternoon early evening at least a half hour before sunset. Drive the mountain road and you will find wonderful views of the Monasteries. All the tour buses will be gone and the place will be virtually empty. Take your pictures now. Find a hotel in Kastraki its the small village nestled at the foot of the mountains. Get up early and beat the tour buses. Visit as many monasteries as you can and when the crowds arrive you have the option of retreating to your hotel for anther night or start the 5 hour drive back to Athens. We chose to stay a second night in Kastraki and make the drive when we were fresh the next morning. It rained during the night and next morning we scooted back up and got more images of the Monasteries in the mist.

You will still have three days to do Athens which is about right to see the main sites.

We didn’t rent a car until we got to Naxos and then did so through our hotel. This was very convenient as several rental companies had arrangements to come to the hotel for paperwork and the car. We rented a car for 2.5 days. We explored the interior of island one day, went to mt Zeus a second, and spent afternoon of third exploring the different beaches.

If you like hiking, you can hike to the top of mt Zeus. We did that one morning and then had a late lunch overlooking on the beach and then spent the rest of the afternoon at the beach.

And one correction to Stan’s great plan. Neamea is not where Cornith is. It is definitely worthwhile though.

Ok Ancient Nemia is on the road just past Corinth. Its located where the road goes south through Nemia wine country but you need to turn the other way and go north a couple of kilometers to find the two Ancient Nemia sites.
