I'm working on a first-time visit to Greece for late April (will avoid Easter dates) to mid May 2022. The ferries don't have any schedules posted and am wondering how far in advance they typically post them. Also, is it wiser to fly to those islands than to ferry?
Thanks much!
Linda
Please share which islands you are considering for the best info.
I think you can probably extrapolate from this year's schedule, but I am not sure if this year's schedules have been altered due to the pandemic.
Gosh, I did leave out some pertinent information! Looking at Mykonos and Santorini due to it being our first visit. Thanks!
{Native South Carolinian here--just got back from IOP--hey!}
I have not been to those islands, but I've delved into Greek itineraries a lot as I hope to return asap, and what many recommend/do is fly upon arrival at Athens to Santorini and work their way back. The idea is to be in Athens last and also shake off jet lag in a beautiful place.
Since those are such popular islands, I think you could feel fairly safe in assuming the schedules for this year will be similar next year.
Once you get the entirety worked out, post here because there is a regular who offers a wealth of advice.
Some ferries are daily, some are every other day-ish, so you shouldn't have any issues moving from island to island. The complete timetables for next year won't be available until sometime close to Greek Easter weekend. The ferries that run between Mykonos and Santorini will be operating after the Greek Easter weekend. That's not a route available all year long. Some good advice: Fly out from Athens to one of those islands when you first arrive, then ferry between them, then fly or ferry back to Athens for the last part of your trip. It's never a good idea to attempt to return to the mainland at the last minute just before your flight home. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a strike, mechanical breakdown, cancellation or high winds could cause you to miss that flight.
Thank you both for your great advice. I will definitely plan our trip accordingly. Your input is very much appreciated.
Several years ago we took the ferry from Piraeus to Santorini and it took about 8 hours. If that's you destination then FLY. We were going to fly back but the air traffic controllers went on strike - so another day wasted on the ferry to get back.
Thanks for that info. I read that every May 1 the entire country goes on strike for the day. Will avoid travel on that date!
