Greece Odyssey

We are Pensioners 76 and wife 70, want to travel from UK by train to Hersonissus/Crete in 2026 around May for around three weeks, flexible on days. Want to be near fishing ports, reasonable hotels 3* minimum.

Enjoy walking, markets, lovely local tavernas.

Anybody who has done this, or familiar with requested criteria, would appreciate tips, and very willing to expand if required

I don't think you'll get an answer because it's not possible to make this trip by train, except perhaps by going through France, Germany or Switzerland, then maybe Austria, then Serbia or Hungary or Bulgaria to reach Thessaloniki or Athens. Then you'll have to take either a flight or a ferry to Crete.

The route via Italy (Brindisi) doesn't work. Ferries from Brindisi only go to the Ionian Islands, which are not connected to Crete.

I know that we can use rail from London through Milan and Bari to Piraeus, I am looking really to see if anyone has done it and for recommendations for hotels near fishing ports and markets.

Cheers

As far as I know, ferries from Bari go to Igoumenitsa or Patras but not to Piraeus.
