Greece May- June 2025 Trip Help

Hello!

It is my first trip to Greece, I have been waiting for my husband to join me and that day has finally come! I purchased a one way flight to Milan months ago and decided I don't want to travel around Italy. So I booked a flight to Athens from Milan then 3 days later to Santorini. I booked the flight on Sky Express and am nervous now, as I read the airline reviews, so any reassurance would be appreciated!

I have also booked a flight from Crete to Thessaloniki 30 days later.

I was wondering how long to spend on each Island and when the best time to book the ferries to each one.

Islands I was thinking we would visit:
Santorini
Naxos
Peros
Milos
Crete
How would you divide up the 30 days? Any islands you would add or remove? What towns are your favorite on each island to stay in? I really don't want to rent cars. Since time really isn't a huge issue, I'd rather take the bus. I don't have a need to see and do everything. As I get older stuff really just runs together in my mind. I enjoy sitting and relaxing by the water, having a glass of wine and eating fresh food (from the market or small restaurants that have a daily menu based on the local catch). I do enjoy history and historic sites, just not all of them.
Thanks for your time and thoughts in advance! :)

I have already taken several flights with Sky Express, it is a very reliable airline. You will always read catastrophic reviews on any airline, take into account a few negative reviews on the airline that will take you to Milan and you will stay at home. :))

If you have a total of 30 days I do not understand why you booked a flight to Thessaloniki on day 30. Do you have a return flight to the US from Thessaloniki? (to my knowledge there is no direct flight Thessaloniki → USA).

You have chosen Crete and the 4 most famous and popular islands in the Cyclades, know that there are about fifteen others just as beautiful and more authentic in the Cyclades islands alone.

Choosing these islands is not necessarily a bad choice but if you do not take into account the ferry routes it will be difficult to establish an itinerary without going back to the same island twice. Especially since apparently you will have to end it in Crete.

When you do island hopping you cannot travel from any island to any other, even if they seem close to each other. There are ferry routes, so sorry if the following will seem "technical"

All ferries that go to Crete from the Cyclades islands go through Santorini, so logically an optimized itinerary should end with:

Santorini → Crete

(However in 2025 there is a possibility to fly from Naxos to Crete 2 times a week from June on Thursdays and Sundays only)

Then, only Milos and Naxos have direct ferries to Santorini.

So you could do:

Milos → Santorini → Crete

or

Naxos → Santorini → Crete

Paros → Santorini → Crete would be more difficult.

In my opinion the best itinerary if you stick to this choice of islands is this one:

Athens → Milos → Paros → Naxos → Santorini → Crete

The trickiest part is going from Milos to Paros since Milos is the only island of your choice located in the Western Cyclades.

If I were you I would replace Paros with Sifnos which would give you the following itinerary:

Athens → Sifnos → Milos → Naxos → Santorini → Crete

eating fresh food (from the market or small restaurants that have a
daily menu based on the local catch)

This is a laudable intention but be aware that the very touristy islands that you have chosen and whose population can be multiplied by 10 or more with the arrival of tourists are barely able to be self-sufficient with only its residents. So do not expect to eat "fresh local catches" at every meal.

What towns are your favorite on each island to stay in?

Apart from Crete which is almost a country in itself, the islands have small villages of a few hundred or thousands of inhabitants including a capital which is the most populated small town and often also the port of arrival of ferries. (not always the best place to stay).

Thank you for responding.

I have our flight to Santorini and our first Airbnb booked so I unfortunately have to start there. The rest of the islands and itinerary is flexible. Except ending in Crete where we are flying to Thessaloniki from.

This is a six month trip so we have no idea what country we will be flying back to the United States from. We are thinking about going to Turkey after Greece, I haven’t gotten that far in my planning. My flight to Thessaloniki is as far as I have come with our plans.

I played around with Ferryhopper to get an idea of ferry costs but I didn’t check every combination. I picked the islands based on YouTube videos and blogs. I am not committed to any particular itinerary. I am open to suggestions based on personal experiences.

I don't know if you are the kind of traveler who wants to plan everything months in advance, if not, and since you have 30 days, what I would do is leave more room for improvisation.

It works very well in the islands, especially in May-June which are not busy periods.

In the islands we have met quite a few travelers doing like this, notably Americans, Canadians and Australians (many retired people). They stay on an island for a few days and then they choose another one that is not too difficult to reach.

For example 3 years ago on an island, we met by chance a guy from New Jersey traveling solo (he was lost in the middle of nowhere without water during a hike). He asked us which next island he could go to. We recommended another island, he went there. He was super happy (he texted us). After a few days we recommended him a next island, he was even happier!
He stayed in the islands longer than us..

Even if you are not that kind of traveler, and since you will have to go to Santorini first, what I advise you is to go to Amorgos after Santorini. Amorgos is the island of the "Big Blue", super beautiful, very authentic, not overrated and crowded like Santorini..

And then you decide.

From Amorgos it is easy to go to Naxos that many forum members will recommend to you.

It's up to you

Beware of Youtube videos and other bloggers / Instagramers. It is often manipulation, sometimes unintentional, done by people who have been manipulated themselves. It's a vicious circle that takes everyone to the same places
Check real travel guides or official websites instead.

For Greece it's this one:

No need to check now on ferryhopper to get ferry schedules for May/June. All schedules will not be published before Mid-March. And anyway you can buy your ferry tickets as you go, no need to book in advance.
