Greece in July

I am looking at going to Greece next summer. The tour looks popular since all the dates up through June have a waitlist. I do not see any July or August dates scheduled. Will there be some posted in the future or is that a bad time to visit?

It will be pretty darn hot in June too, however the real crowds start in July and peak in August , so tour groups like RS tours are wise to avoid visiting then, especially since I doubt they find as many hotels willing to book blocks of rooms to them at reasonable rates !!!'

However there are less crowded islands that are lovely still in summer , we love Naxos and Paros is on our list ( I've only been there once years ago) .

At the beginning of July this year, the temps in Athens soared to 108-109F.

Next question . . .

I've been to Greece in July, believe me, you don't want to go then. All I did was think about how hot I was. Hated it.....not Greece, the weather.

Chani the temps do not soar that high in the islands , the sea breezes keepnit a tad more temperate, still hot , but the water is awesome !!

I may be wrong in that I do not pay much attention to tour schedules, but the RS Tour Group may avoid tours in July and August since that is peak season, more so in the islands, but also Greece in general. That would drive up costs and make booking an issue. I would not be surprised if you saw dates then pop up in September and October, skipping over July and August.

I think Paul is wrong. If you look at the dates, RS doesn't have tours in Spain (except the north), Portugal, Village Italy, or Sicily in July/August either - all the places that are generally extremely hot then, but there are tours in most major tourist destinations all through high season. And RS doesn't have tours to the Greek islands. Also in those hot, southern destinations, July-August is not high season - for instance, hotel rates in SEvilla drop significantly in July-August compared to June and September.

I agree with Chani. It's been my understanding that the reason for not scheduling RS Tours in July & Aug. is due to the heat. That being said, we were in Greece for the month of Sept. The first 2 weeks were in the mid 90's this year. By the 3rd week it started "cooling" some. The last 10 days we were in the islands and it was tolerable! Needed a light sweater in the evening by the end of September.

To avoid the summer heat of Greece, especially Athens you are better off going either spring or fall with less tourists, lower costs and still very comfortable weather. While tours are very convenient and mostly stress free you'll be on someone else's schedule and hope the accommodations "chosen" for you meet your needs and where you want to go.

Nothing wrong with tours like RS, but Greece is very doable on your own. Lots of good guide books, websites and travel forums to help you make decisions . . . and you'll spend a lot less money.

With the internet you can book your flight, contact accommodations for better deals and customer service, go where you want, when you want, take side trips, get lost, meet "real" Greeks, and find the out-of-the-way-less touristy Greece.

We are do-it-your-selfers and find research enjoyable, fun, educational and helps while away the cold, snowy and dreary winters of the northeast USA.

In the end do what's best for you

Hello,

If you are looking to visit Greece in the summer it is better do it in June or early in July. From mid July to late August the temperatures are pretty high. So, when you go sight seeing or swimming it is better to do it with normal conditions. Another option is to visit Greece early September. Generally, when you visit off-season you also get better accommodation deals. If you do plan to visit Greece, I suggest you try the Greek Island Hopping experience. The Cyclades are the best place to do that...
