Greece in February Advice

Good day, hoping you could help me with a few suggestions. I turn 50 in Feb, so my partner and I thought Athens would be a fun get away. I know the weather won't be ideal, but hopefully the crowds a little less. We are thinking 7-8 days in total, and I would prefer to take public transportation rather than rent a car, unless someone strongly thinks otherwise.

After arriving in Athens on Sat 14, we would then stay local for a few days. We are then torn on either taking a bus or ferry to Nafplio or Delphi for a night or two. Would also consider Hydra or Aegina for a night or two, but I am not sure if that's practical in the winter. Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance!

There’s no problem getting to Aegina in the winter. There are regular flying dolphins from Piraeus. We often do it for lunch if we are there over Christmas and New Year.

Having said that I think Nafplio is the better bet. There’s more town and, if you are prepared to hire a car for a day, you can visit Mycenae and Epidavrus. I agree it isn’t necessary to have a car for the trip down: the buses from Athens are regular and reliable.

February is still cold, but I agree, there are definitely fewer crowds. No need to rent a car, you can check the KTEL buses that leave from Athens to go to many different cities in the Peloponnese. If you want to do a day trip to Aegina, I suggest you did it from Athens (there should be boats running, but you can also double check on ferry hopper). For the Hydra trip, it is indeed better to leave from Nauplion (it's cheaper and closer). I hope that helps and enjoy your stay!

Good afternoon and thank you Alan and NinjaTurtle, I really appreciate the tips and advice. Good to know you would recommend Nafplio. Any thoughts on Aegina vs Hydra? It sounds like both are accessible in February. Lastly, would you do a day trip, or recommend staying a night or two (in Nafplio, Aegina or Hydra)?
Kind regards!

I can’t comment on Aegina v Hydra as I’ve never been to Hydra. You can do an organised trip which takes in Aegina, Hydra and Poros but, having seen it arrive at both Aegina and Poros, the time in each place seems very rushed.you spend most of the day on the ferry.

If you want to use public transport then an overnight in Nafplio is best. A day trip from Athens is possible - it’s about 3 hours each way - but again would be rushed. Again there are organised tours of the Argolid which take in Corinth Canal, Mycenae and Nafplio. If you opt for one of these go for the ‘without lunch’ option and buy a sandwich before you get on the bus. More time to wander about at your destination and you’re not trapped eating a fairly bland meal in a hotel dining room.

It was some years ago but I’ve been to Aegina and Hydra in the off season (November). Hydra has a very picturesque little town but I felt after an hour or two I’d seen it all. I’ve heard there are some nice hikes outside town but didn’t do that. Aegina town, where I spent the night, isn’t quite as beautiful but had a bit more of a “real Greek town” feel to me. Aegina has an interesting ancient temple. I took a local bus from the town there and back which worked out, but if I did it again I think I would just find a cab to hire to take me there, wait while I saw the temple, and bring me back. Aegina is famous for its pistachios. The other places you mention are all worthwhile as well. I think there would be some chance of bad road conditions going to Delphi in February as that area is very mountainous.

Good morning Alan and Slate, thank you for your replys! I really appreciate it, and now have some great ideas on what to book. Interesting about Delphi, as I never thought about the weather in the mountains. Very good to know. Appreciate your time and efforts. Have a great day!

We passed a ski resort driving to Delphi! Like you, I had never considered snow in Greece.

Now we were there in June so the snow was not an issue but I snapped some pictures of the signs for our son who lives in Colorado.

HI BethFL,
That is crazy! I should have considered snow, but it didn't cross my mind for that area. I bet your son was impressed. Like CO, sunshine in one area and snow in the other ;) Thanks for the comment! Cheers.
