Greece from March 27-April 6: Travel Concerns

We want to visit Athens, Hydra, and Santorini the end of March into the first week of April. We are concerned that many of stores, shops, hotels, ferries, and sites will be closed. Has anyone been there that early in their tourist season? Thanks

Athens will be fine. Everything is open year round and, at that time of year, there will be less crowds. Many places now have space heaters so it is possible to sit outside even at that time of year.

I've been to Santorini in mid March and it was very closed up. Some, but not all, restaurants were open but most of the tourist shops were closed. It is likely that places will begin to open up in early April but I'd be prepared for some to still be closed.

Alan, thanks for your post. It was very helpful. I think we are going to have to change our travel dates. I don't want to travel all that way and feel frustrated by all the closures. Frustration is not the emotion I want to feel on vacation! Thanks again.

Weather would be another problem in March/April. Chances are very good that it will be cold and cloudy, and rain is not at all unusual then. If possible postpone your trip until mid-May so the weather is nice and warm and all the shops and restaurants are open.

Thanks Lee. As much as it worked out better with our schedule to go in April, you have convinced me to move our trip to May. Now I have to figure out when their Easter is so I don't go that week!

You don't have to figure it out, now that we have Google... just type in "2014 Greek Easter Dates" and you'll find it is April 20, this year ORthodox easter is the same as the Western Christian Calendar.

Thanks Janet. It looks like out trip is taking shape. We will travel in May when the weather is better weather, no conflict with Easter, and everything should be open. I just bought my Rick Steve's book of Greece. Would not plan a trip without it. I have bought his books for Ireland and Italy and we have had great trips!
