Does anyone have experience with weight limitations for check-in baggage on Aegean Airlines? The limit seems to be a bit over 17 lbs for domestic carry-on. Our suitcases each weight about 21 lbs. Should we pay for the extra weight ahead of time on Aegean's website, or wait until we get to the airport and seeing what the charge is? Any advice? We have a flight booked from Athens to Ikaria next week.

No personal experience, but the above shows the rates for prepaid vs. 'at the airport' and the even higher 'at the gate' fee.
So as Dirty Harry asked, "Are you feeling lucky..?"
Thanks. Yes, we've checked Aegean website. Hoping to hear from somebody who has taken an Aegean flight recently and can share their experience.
Our experience is not recent but they were checking luggage closely when we flew a few years ago. Look -- you have no choice other than to follow their rules. If you are going to try beat the weight limit then you absolutely need a plan B. Most budget airlines are fairly strict since you get a lot of extra revenue from luggage fees. If you want to roll the dice then go to the airport and see what happens. Most US travelers ignore weight limits because our airlines do not enforce it and give the impression that the weight is not important. Not true with European discount airlines.
In Prague we watch a family of six try to avoid bag limits and weight at the gate. When we passed them in the boarding process the argument was on-going. They never board the plane.
I have taken quite a few flights with Aegean/Olympics, I have never personally had any weight or size checks on my cabin baggage since I only take a small soft bag in the cabin, my other being checked baggage allways under the 23kg limit.
From time to time (but rarely), I've seen passengers have their baggage sizes checked with the sizers provided at check-in or boarding.
Note that your flight to Ikaria is operated by Olympic Airlines on an ATR72 turboprop. The max sizes for cabin baggage are smaller than normal: 55cm x 40cm x 23cm (instead of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm on Airbus planes).
If you have any doubts about the weight or size, don't hesitate to upgrade to a ComfortFlex fare for a few euros more.
There is only one flight per day to Ikaria with a maximum of 70 passengers. The airport building is very small. Checked baggage are removed from the plane and delivered very quickly, you wont wait a long time for it anyway.
As I often see peoples worrying about the safety of this or that when they travel. Remember that these weight regulations must be respected, it's for your safety. A captain on an ATR can refuse to take off if he/she consider the total weight too heavy.
(and Aegean is not a budget airline, but the Greek national airline. Olympics is its regional branch)
We flew Aegean about 18 months ago and everyone’s bag in our party of 12 was weighed. As we expected (and as we had planned), any bag over the carryon weight limit was required to be checked.
I have flown Aegean maybe a half dozen times. The planes to the islands are very small. We carried on luggage from the US but didn’t even try to do so on Aegean.
