Harley, are you in a situation where you have a hotel booked noncancellable in Athens ONLY, so you can only do a day trip, must be back in Athens to spend the night, every night? Unless this is clarified, I cannot give my best suggestions.
yes I'm staying in a youth hostel for 4 days but can make changes if I want to I have up to the day before I go to make changes
Most day trips would consists of going to nearby islands such as Aegina or Hydra, both of which are very popular and worth a visit, especially in April when they'll be far less tourists around and the weather good. You could do a day trip to Cape Sounion, Corinth, even Nafplio if you get an early start . . . or you could just take your time and explore Athens and linger at some of the world's best archeological sites on and around the Acropolis. There are numerous world-class museums, the Plaka, Anafiotika, Athinas St., Central Markets and much more to see and experience. One thing I have learned from travel is to slow and down and enjoy what you are experiencing. Quality is sometimes more important than quantity.
Do you have a RS Guide Book for Greece yet? If so, great. If not I would suggest that you get one as it has lots of information to assist you in your visit to Greece as it did us last summer.
Without a car, daytrips are very difficult to manage unless you take an organized tour. There is a public bus that goes to Delphi and some people have done that (early morning departure and returns mid-afternoon). A daytrip to Hydra is pretty easy from Athens as it's a short ferry ride.
