All -- Any one stayed at this hotel/visited this area of town in Athens? It has pretty good recent reviews on Trip Advisor/Expedia, but some people do mention the area is not safe. Is this true? We have a refundable reservation -- I can change it, but would prefer to keep it as hotels have been booked up pretty quickly for our trip in May. Any thoughts?

This is right off Omonia Square (circle) a very busy traffic area by day, but after dark, a certain iffy element, drugs, ladies of the evening etc. No, you wouldn't want to stroll around there ... that's why you check before booking. What is your budget limit? In EUROS as well as dollars please ... In Mid-May for rooms from 60-90E, There are hotels on and around Mitropoleos Street that are moderate rate Hotel Pan, Arethusa, Mitropoleos Hotel Cecil, Hotel Cypria-- not fancy but affordable & close to Syntagma square. Also in Plaka, hotel Myrto, Hotel Nefeli, On South side of Acropolis (quieter, less traffic) there is hotel Hera, HOtel Airotel Parthenon, Art Gallery Hotel --- quite a lot of choice, and all in safe neighborhoods. I find a handy sorting mechanism for seeking out hotels near the center in good areas is booking.com -- you sort by LANDMARKS, and choose from Landmark List ACROPOLIS ... and they will show you only hotels that are closer than .7 mile from Acropolis .. here's a "tiny URL" which will link you to that list. Thanks Janet. We need 2 rooms from May 15-18th and a lot of the hotels are sold out :( Since we have my parents with us, I'd like a nicer place vs budget. I got 2 rooms for 3 nights at the Grecotel for 850 euros, which seems really good. I'll continue to look and see if I can find something closer to the main part of town. Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Priya, In 2007 my husband and a friend stayed at Hotel Attalos and said it was very nice, enjoyed the terrace and the location so we are staying there the end of May before our RS Athens and the Heart of Greece tour.

Priya, I just used the link that i gave to you, punched in your 3 nights (May 15-16-17) asking for total for 2 double rooms for 4 adults, refundable reservation, and found availabilty for the Following at rates cited:
HOTEL ASTOR -- €654! incl bkfst -- only 100 yards from Syntagma Sq -- A GREAT value
only 3 rooms left! -- I would grab this one
ATHENS DIAMOND PLUS -- €660-780 incl bkfst -- nearby; 2 reg or deluxe doubles ONLY 2 rooms of each left
PHILLIPOS HOTEL -- €810 incl bkfstOn S. Side of Acropolis; good location! -- also almost sold out
All these have TA ratings of "Very GOOD" Others I trust, also less than 1 mi from Acropolis, with good ratings --
not quite as convenient, maybe a bit smaller? but in the 500-600€ for 2 rms include:
Marble HOuse, Art Gallery Hotel, Hotel Nefeli
... these would all please your parents, are in better streets than Attalos (which I think is sold out anyway) so Do Not Dither! they will be snapped up & will be better for your purposes than the one you picked. Good luck, now Get Busy!
