Grande Bretagne to Airport Options (with large luggage!)

Hi - will be at Grande Bretagne for a couple days post cruise in August. Will be 4 us with a large suitcase each. I'm not sure how large taxis are there but will it be easy to get a taxi from there (mid-day on a Monday) that will fit us or is this something we should be looking to book in advance?

I've seen a number of posts about how easy metro and bus are from the hotel but with the large suitcases (and likely easy of us with a small backback or purse) I want to avoid anything with too much walking and particularly any stairs.

Thoughts?

I used Welcome Pickups in Athens for trips to and from the airport. These are taxis that are prebooked via either their website or app. All drivers speak English, were professional and on time.

I'm assuming you are referring to the Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens? I had to Google it. There are car services as previously mentioned. And there are taxi vans driven by several Athens taxi companies. Ask your hotel concierge to book one of a suitable size for the day and time you need it.

Yes - I forgot this was a general Greece forum and not an Athens specific forum. I just checked out the Welcome Pickup site and looks like the prebooking is only a little bit over what I've read is the flat rate to just hail a taxi and they seem to have a lot of good reviews so will likely go with them!

David be sure you specify to Welcome Pickups that you have FOUR adults, each with a "LAarge" suitcase. The standard vehicle for both taxi companies AND car services is a 4-door mercedes. It will be difficult to fit 3 n the back seat of even this capacious car, lunless 2 are small size women, and men in the party are under 200 pounds. Also, I've found that while this size of car can (barely) wedge in 4 20 or 2l" "rollaboard" suitcases, it cannoot accommodat eht large (25"?) bags required for cruises, with all that dress-up. In addition, all 4 of you wouold have to hold your "daybags/Knapsacks" on your laps. If you give the dimensions of your bags, a car-service probably will charge you for a mini-van or at least a RV. If that is fine witih you, then go ahead... just know what to expect.

If you'd rather take public transit without crowds, rush or any steps, you have a wonderful resource only a few hundred feet away from the front Door of Grand Bretagne, lucky you! It's x95 KTEL EXpress bus to ATH airport... and it stops at the far uphill corner of Syntagma Square from you, at the curb at the top of OThonos Street. You can see it from the hotel door or windows. There's a kiosk where you buy your ticket (€6) and you step right from SIdewalk into bus... modern, air-conditioned, comfortable, goes about every 35 minutes; a timetable is on the sign. Takes same road as taxi or cars service, in mid-day, about same travel tme, under an hour. Only about 2 stops... so, No pickpocketing or pushing. You take your baggage on board, and pile it in a central "pen" right next to you. When you reach airport, it's terminus, take your sweet time getting off, and 5 feet away is door 5 into main room of Airport.

IF you say you've seen posts on how easy this is, you must have missed mine or you would not have questions. I post this info every week, and it always seems to be met with surprise, as if it's something new ... yet I've used this for at least 8 of my 13 Trips to Greece i nthe past 25 years.

I agree with Janet regarding the space limit in a taxi, even though it can officially carry up to 4 passengers.
Most taxis have Skoda Octavias or Mercedes Class-E which don't have the trunk capacity to fit 4 large suitcases.

It would be better to book a minivan.

Or take the X95 bus as Janet suggests. The stop is right in front of the Grande Bretagne Hotel (on the other side of Syntagma Square) here:

(Turn the view 180° and you'll see the hotel behind the trees.)

It's actually €5.50. You can use tap to pay directly inside the bus if you have a VISA or MasterCard credit card.

Thanks - while my wife and daughter are both under 100 pounds - so people space isn't an issue - the bags as one would expect for a cruise plus some pre and post days are rather large which is why I was asking about the size of cars - definitely don't want a surprise when something gets us and it can't fit.

If we do a transfer - will do a minivan to be safe. The bus does look pretty easy - all bags have wheels and the walk from hotel to bus seems pretty flat from the google earth "walk" and looks like no big steps onto bus (I've been in some places where getting large suitcases onto buses or trains was nearly impossible.)

I think this gives me what I needed to know!
