We are taking a cruise in July out of Athens. Flying in 2 days ahead of time for some site seeing. Where is a good neighborhood to stay?
When we were in Athens, we stayed at the King George Hotel, which was right in the middle of everything. I don't know what neighborhood that is but sightseeing from the hotel was quite easy.
You probably would want to find a hotel in central Athens, look for a hotel in Plaka or Monastraki area. That is the heart of the ancient sites in Athens
In Athens, at the beginning and end of our RS Tour, we stayed at the Hotel Hera. Good location for the all the sites.
The Omiros Hotel is on Apollonos Street, right on the edge of the Plaka and an easy walk to everything. Reasonable room rates and great buffet breakfast.
I thought our location was perfect. The Hotel Phaedra, at the south end of the Plaka. Super easy walking to sites in any direction:
- Acropolis and Anafiotika to the west
- Acropolis Museum and Syngrou to the south
- Temple of Olympian Zeus and Panathinaikos Stadium to the southeast
- Syntagma, Parliament and National Gardens to the northeast
- rest of the Plaka, Monastiraki, the Market, the Agora and the National Archaeological Museum to the northwest.
We stayed at the Aerotel Parthenon, which is about a 5-minute walk from the Plaka, and a 10 minute walk from the Acropolis. Near tons of restaurants. Excellent location. We walked every where.
Cost was $140 per night in May 2022 which included a mediocre breakfast buffet but as I said there are numerous restaurants nearby if you prefer to go out for breakfast. Our room was clean but small.
Plaka.
My place there is Sweet Home Hotel but there are dozens of others.
We stayed on Syntagma Square, convenient to the many sites that interested us.Kolonaki is another very nice neighborhood.
That is where the King George Hotel, mentioned above, is located.
We stayed in Plaka one time and had a horrible experience at the Electra Palace Hotel. Fled after one sleepless night due to loud noises in walls which manager said did not ever happen!!
Here's an article that may influence where to stay in Athens or maybe not stay in Athens due to the huge increase in the number of people going to Greece and particularly Athens.
Obviously Athens is a must but if you stay in Athens try to find areas that are outside the main tourist area like Koukaki, Thessio or Gazi. All still close enough to the main sites in Athens but less touristy and crowded.

Even better try to go off season where at least the numbers of tourists are less.
Here's a excellent website that will tell you about the different Athens neighborhoods and maybe help you decide where to stay to offer the more "Greek" areas of the city.
Our stay at InnAthens near Syntagma Square was terrific. Walking distance to all of the sites. Modern hotel with great air-conditioning. Staff was very welcoming and professional and a wonderful breakfast.
