Any suggestions for safe gluten free restaurants in Athens or in Koroni and Finikounda?
You can easily order gluten-free anywhere in Greece because the Mediterranean diet is largely protein/meat and fruits and vegetables. Your dinners lunches can be salads and roast vegetables and your dinners can be chicken/pork/seafood and vegetables.
Breakfast will be a bit more difficult, but eggs, ham, olives, and fruit are available at most places and hotel buffets.
Omelets were widely available on lunch and/or dinner menus in Greece at the time of my last visit (1996). My guess is that there are places serving them at breakfast as well.
You'll find that much of western Europe is more accommodating and aware of gluten allergies than most of America (although that is getting better). Always let your server know and they will work with you.
You will also find that what we think of as "Greek" food in the US is nothing like what real Greek food is. So if you think everything will be wrapped in filo, think again. Obviously there will be some things you'll miss out on, but you won't have any issues finding plenty to eat.
The previous posts about the Mediterranean diet being much more gluten friendly are totally accurate. I’d like to recommend a particular restaurant in Athens, because we were SO impressed with the food!! “Kalyvas”, in Koukaki, does the most amazing skewered roasted meats I have eaten!!
It's true that many Greeks are naturally gluten-free. I had a lot of trouble locating gluten-free bread though. We were doing some picnics, and I never found anything satisfactory. Next time I'll bring a loaf of Schar's from home (it's vacuum sealed and lasts forever).
