Hello
I am gluten free (allergic to wheat, barley , rye ie celiac disease) and am travelling to Athens, Nafplion, Santorini and Naxos (plaka beach). Any recommendations on restaurants or where to buy GF bread? thx laura

Laura I just responded to an earlier thread labeled "Athens" she wanted to know about gluten free. I simply Googled "gluten-free in Greece" and came up with several helpful links ... you can download a card in Greek that requests Gluten free (altho most restaurant people speak english, this is handy). One of the websites gives full discussion of how to deal with eating in greece for celiac/gluten free -- and even gives a list with descriptions & pictures of foods that are safe/gluten free. Most of those pictured are offered an almost any traditional Greek taverna (I dont mean "taverns" --- that is the word used for casual-dining places in Greece) With guidance like that, you can go to many restaurants, not just those with special menus.

You also might consider Googling "good gluten-free restaurants in (Place)" and you might get links to restaruants that are particularly aware, and proud of their extensive gluten-free offerings.

Thanks Janet! I really appreciate that! Hey, since I see you posting some, what do you rec for Ferry from Santorini to Naxos. Do I buy same day or book ahead? If so, where should I go to book? thx again for your amazing expertise! Laura

I was on Naxos in 2019 and was not eating gluten at the time. We stayed at Hotel Grotta, which has consistently fantastic reviews, but is not a beach hotel. However, the owner has a niece who is celiac and so when she found out about my gluten issues, she came up to my room with all sorts of gluten free snacks that she would not accept money for. And then, every morning at breakfast, she pointed out the gluten free items from the enormous breakfast. As if all of that were not enough, she delivered my very own hot baked item - just for me and right to my table - gluten free and yummy, each morning.

there are 2 ferries i recommend ... the Champion "fast ferry" at 10:45 - arr about noonish... reserved seats indoors (costs 2x as much as he conventional ferry ), but has a small outdoor back deck u can stand on to look at cliffs during departure. Has seats for about 1000, also 200 cars the other is Blue Star large conventional ferry , -- 1500-1800 passenger capacity. dep 3:30 - arr 5:30. On this one you just buy basic economy (€19 last year) and sit out on the 2 upper back decks to admire the view. Easy enough to buy the day before --- Unless you're talking about Late July early August or a couple of days before or after Easter... all ferries are busy then. But you want advice without giving dates .... that's like asking "how long is a piece of string?"

Hey Thanks so much! I really appreciate all your feedback! I also love your very wry comment about how long is a string. Yes, of course, how can you comment on No dates. Duh? Sorry, we are going to Naplion July 2-4, Athens 4-6, Santorini 6-8 and Naxos 8-12; thx for all the help, Laura
