Getting from Athens to Ljubljana for back to back RS tours

We just signed up for the 2020 Greece tour followed by the Best of the Adriatic. I could not find any routing I liked from Athens to Ljubljana. There are no direct flights and any flight I found online seemed to involve long layovers. Flight plus train or bus did not seem to be easy either.
The best I can do seems to be fly Athens to Vienna on the final day of the Greece tour, then From Vienna to Ljubljana the next day. We would just stay at a hotel at Schwechat that night.
Any better options available?

Not sure about prices or timing, but our Ljubljana visit started by flying into Venice (from Romania) then renting a car and driving thru Slovenia and Croatia, returning the car in Venice and visiting that city again. You may not be looking at a car rental, and a Venice-Ljubljana train would likely take a few hours, but was that an option you’d considered but determined to be not easy? If it works, what about going to another “V” town, Venice, instead of Vienna from Athens?

We need only one way, so returning a rental car would not work. I looked at a train from Venice, but it took too long. Thanks!

Bob, last fall we took the GoOpti shared shuttle from Venice to Ljubljana. It was 2.5 hours. This might be an option for you. We bought our tickets well in advance and felt it was reasonable. They pick up either at Piazzale Roma or the airport. We left Venice at 10:00 and arrived at 12:30. You are dropped off across from the Main train station. It was an easy 10 min. walk to town. Great customer service. www.GoOpti.com.

The website rome2rio.com suggests flying to Zagreb and taking an hourly shuttle from there to Ljubljana which they claim would be an hour faster than flying into Venice and taking a shuttle to Ljublana. I don't always trust that rome2rio.com will be totally accurate but I do use it as a starting place to see the possible ways to get between two places.

When I searched for flights to Zagreb, there were no non-stops on the dates we're traveling. I have figured out though that Olympic does fly non-stop, but April 2020 is not available yet. However, it appears to be a single flight per day at 8am, much earlier than I like to fly. GoOpti does pick up from the airport and you can schedule a private shuttle for 4.

If you fly to Venice, you can also take a GoOpti van (kind of like a Super Shuttle). Rates are reasonable and reviews are good.
