Getting from Athens airport to acropolis area

Hello, we are staying in a hotel near Acropolis, and I am just wondering, what is the best way to get from the airport to the hotel? Is taking a taxi fastest? Also, is uber an option? Is taking the metro train an easy option? Thanks,

Jason

Jason, if you want help, specifics are good. It matters whether you arrive by day or late at night. (to orient u, a map -http://www.orangesmile.com/destinations/img/athens-map-big.jpg - click to enlarge) 3 options:
• TAXI - If you arrive by day, the taxi flat rate is €38 for Central athens hotels. If you'd arrive at hotel after midnight rate is €65. Taxis and bus take same amount of time to Syntagma.
• EXPRESS BUS - If your hotel is anywhere near Syntagma Square, you can take the X95 bus, that lets you off right at the curb in Syntagma. Goes every 20 mins, outside terminal exit door, costs €6, buy ticket at a counter (and be sure to VALIDATE it by punching it into a pole-mounted box inside the bus). Takes about 50-60 minutes, your luggage is piled in a "pen" inside bus, express thus no pickpocket fears, relax for the ride, even doze (as I do, getting off an overnight flight in horrible economy seat!!).

• METRO - cross street in front of airport building take escalator up to platform. Takes about 45 minutes ... but FWIW, it's a "wash" time-wise with X95 bus, by the time you get to platform, wait for train, and the extra time required to get from underground to street. For me, the downsides are (1) pickpocket peril in a crowded metro, there's little petty crime in Athens but Metro is where it happens, due to unwary tourists, and (2) when you arrive at Syntagma, big rush/crush to get off, hampered by bags. If your hotel is not near the Syntagma station, you COULD switch from Blue Line to Red line to get to other side of Acropolis --- but for a newbie, struggling thru a crowded station to a new platform is NOT recommended, especially if you're a public transport Virgin, as so many Americans are.
• UBER - I see no reason to use it vs. flat-rate taxi, since yr place is in Central Athens.

I could be more helpful, less wordy, if you'd shared (1) name of hotel and (2) arrival time.

I completely agree with the above comments and would use taxi from airport. We took the train--seemed cheap and easy. When the train became crowded after a while some guys tried to steal my husband's luggage's as he held it--they said they wanted to "help.' It was chaos in the station and elevator--very crowded and felt a hand in my pocket. We were staying in the Plaka area so the train should have been a nice and easy option and it was an easy to walk to our hotel but would not do it again.

Thanks every one for the super helpful responses! Sounds like I will be sticking with flat rate taxi's lol!

Glad to help, Jason, and as a favor to helpers on these forums, next time you ask a similar question, give the key details -- such as arrival time and actual hotel location -- so we don't have to give ALL options so that one may fit.
