Getting around Crete/Itinerary for 4 days

We arrive Saturday June 8th midnight in Chania Crete, getting a hotel in Chania for the night. The rest is unplanned, but we are wanting to hit Elafonisi, Balos & Kissamos, then head over to Herakloin to catch the Wednesday or Thursday ferry to Santorini.
Should we rent a car or is there enough taxis to get to each place? If there are taxis what are the rates like?
Sunday June 9th - spending the day in Chania (suggestions on things to do? or places to eat?).
Monday June 10th - Drive to Kissamos visit Balos beach, spend the night in Kissamos.
Tuesday June 11th - Drive to Elafonisi, spend the night in Elafonisi.
Wednesday June 12 - Drive to Herakloin, make scenic stops on the way. (Car rental return in herakloin?), spend the night in Herakloin.
Thursday June 13 - AM ferry to Santorini

We're planning a trip right now for September, but are staying on Crete the whole time. We're looking at picking up a car in Heroklion, and returning it in Chania, so an "open-jaw" car rental is possible . . . check to see whether your rental outfit charges a one-way fee for the convenience.

One thing, I note you keep referring to "Herakloin," but the English translations for the city seem to be Heraklion, Iraklion, or even just Iraklio. Happy travels!

We used Chania as our base and traveled to the places you plan to stay( Elafonisi, Balos, Kissamos.
Sunday Lunch is a Greek family tradition, gathering in a restaurant. Ask your hotel to make you a reservation in Chania.
Heraklion- we went there for the sole purpose of visiting ancient Knossos.
