Gavdos Island?

We’re returning to Crete in September & considering spending a couple of nights on tiny Gavdos Island, off the southwest coast. I’d appreciate thoughts or suggestions from anyone who’s ever been there. Thanks.

As I have only been there in my dreams as of yet, several times, after having read about it, the one thing I know at present is that Gavdos seems a remote destination. Just the name... Gavdos...

It is remote — a 2 to 4 hour ferry ride — but from Hora Sfakion and Sougia it just looks so tempting. I’m hoping for some first-hand accounts before I commit.

I have never been there, I know friends who went there (twice) in the 2010s
It is indeed a place lost in the middle of nowhere with a bit of a hippie / backpacker atmosphere where you can camp on the beach, do nudism and where electricity is not available permanently (in the places that have it).
The few accommodations are very basic.

The second time they had to spend 2 extra days on Gavdos, there was no ferry because of the wind.

Well, JoLui, you make it seem a little less tempting. We don’t need luxury, but we do like electricity. And at 79 & 81, we’re a bit past the nude hippie camping on the beach thing.

I read that there are sometimes day trip ferries from Hora Sfakion— that may be a better alternative. Thanks for the response.

Its paradise on earth. You just have to secure accommodation and you have food (taverna or sth) nearby. Also prepare for nudism. This is the nudist paradise primarily for Greeks but also for people from overseas.

You wont be disappointed. Also check the weather. The locals say that Gavdos decides when you go and you leave. The ferries are small and when/if the sea is rough, you simply have no option but stay longer. Plan your flights accordingly.

Thanks Nick and JoLui. We think we’ll wait til we’re on Crete, and then decide between a day trip & an overnight, depending on weather. I think we’d regret not even trying.

Last May when we were on Crete, that ferry hit some rocks at Gavdos and took about a week to repair, stopping all the ferry trips along the southern coast. So yes, we understand that the sea will be in charge of this trip.
