We are planning to rent out a car fron Athens and drive to Delhpi and then to Meteora as suggested in one of the discussions by Stanbr. After seeing Meteora, is it good to head back and stay at Athens? Or is there any other destination where we could stay the night. We would like to take a ferry to Mykanos. What is the best port from where we could take the ferry?
Our trip in April 2018 included driving to Delphi, although not on to Meteora. We spent time seeing the ancient site of Delphi and its museum. We also stayed one night at a hotel in the town Delphi, but another just down the road, in Galaxidi, on the coast. If you were to stay in the Delphi area, I’d recommend Galaxidi over Delphi. No loud, partying college kids, nice setting, great seafood restaurant.
To avoid backtracking on your itinerary, let's look at the sequence. Coming back from Meteora, you'd be turning in your car at the airport, right? (no one wants to take a car INTO Central Athens, eeek). The port of Rafina, west of the airport about 25 minutes, has numerous ferries to Mykonos. Hotel AVRA, which overlooks the beach & port in the village of Rafina, offers free shuttle service from Airport (as long as you request it at the time of booking a room). You don't say when your trip is, but that might be a relaxing choice if you're visiting in hot summer weather .... drop car noonish or afternoon, check into hotel, have a swim, then dinner at one of the many tavernas, next AM an early ferry to Mykonos.
We stayed at Avra last September. We were flying out the next morning but chose Rafina because we had a half day to put in. Avra has a beach right in front of the hotel. The hotel overlooks the ferry port.
Good suggestions from Janet.
