What did you enjoy in athens? Where did you stay near airport in athens? Trying to stay away from crowds, but want to see the Kodak pic moments and history.
What self walking tour did you do in athens?
Why would you stay near the airport?
There is no point in staying near the airport. It is located 45 minutes from the city center, and in an uninteresting suburban area like the majority of major international airports in the world.
Almost all the historic sites of Athens are located in the same area which is partly pedestrianized around the Acropolis hill.
This area roughly includes the Plaka and Makrygianni neighborhoods and the surroundings of Syntagma and Monastiraki squares. Except in winter, staying away from crowds in these areas is an almost impossible challenge.
There are often people here who say they want to stay "away from crowds", but even if I suggest other neighborhoods I think they all end up going to tourist areas anyway :))
And it is probably a good choice for a first time in Athens

We were in Athens in September. There were a fair amount of people, yes, but except for the Acropolis, not any more crowded than the other cities we visited in Europe. And, like Venice and other places, there are much fewer people just a couple blocks off the main tourist drags.
On our first Greece trip, 6 years ago, we stayed at Peri’s Hotel, relatively close to the airport. They were recommended by Rick Steves, and picked us up at the airport, when we arrived at night. It was late, and they arranged to have dinner delivered to our room by a nearby restaurant that was about to close. We were heading out of Athens by ferry the next morning, and they drove us to the ferry port. Peri’s was comfortable, inexpensive, convenient, and provided outstanding service.
When we returned to Athens for a few nights at end of our trip, we stayed at another hotel, more downtown, south of the Acropolis, closer to major sights. Peri’s was a good choice when being closer to the airport was the priority.
