Flooding & Earthquakes Impact to Crete, Santorini, Naxos June 2025?

Hello,

We will be flying into Athens 6/18/25 with plans to travel to Naxos (maybe Antiparos), Santorini then Crete. We are wondering how the much the flooding & the earthquakes have (and still are) impacting those areas specifically.

We had also planned to visit Paros but have decided to skip that this trip due to the devastating floods that they recently experienced.

Was Naxos spared? Is Santorini safe now? And, how extensive was the damage to Chania, Crete? Should we stay closer to Heraklion instead?

*** In general, will we be able to do and see all of the things that we would like? Or should we bail on this trip entirely for June 2025?

Any advice would be helpful please!

Is Santorini safe now?

Read Amy's 4/20 post at the bottom of this thread:

That said (and as local George_Santo stated) "The reality is that nature doesn’t follow a schedule—earthquakes and natural events are unpredictable." And as jonrossjan said, " It’s (seismic activity) been happening for more than a millennia and will continue for and other millennia and then some."

So what it is today might not be what it is tomorrow, next week, next month... All part of living in a seismically active part of the world.

Thank you, Kathy! To be honest, we are less concerned about Oia, Santorini and the earthquakes right now.

Mostly concerned about the flooding. From what we can tell Paros was the worst hit but we also read a news article that said "Crete was the hardest hit". So, it's hard to find solid information about the state of things.

Thanks again!

I just got back from a trip that included Crete, just a day or so after the flooding.

In the tourist areas (including the harbors) of the places I visited - Chania, Rethymno, Knossos and Heraklion - I couldn't see any evidence of the flooding. Either I wasn't in the places that were affected, or it had already been cleaned up.

CWsocial, that is wonderful news! Thank you so much for taking the time to post!

Do you have a preference Chania vs Heraklion? Recommendations on places to stay?

Thanks again!

I loved the harbor of Chania and the restaurants at water's edge.

Our tour stayed at the Khydon Hotel Chania. In Heraklion, we stayed at the Olive Green Hotel. Both were modern hotels with European style buffet breakfasts, good wifi, small but modern bathrooms and nice storage in the rooms.

We had also planned to visit Paros but decided to skip that trip due
to the devastating floods they recently experienced.

The "devastating floods" in Paros were concentrated only on the main street of Naoussa, where the water has no other path to take due to the specific configuration of this area.
There is no longer any trace of what you think of as "a disaster"; it's business as usual, this flooding occurs regularly in Naoussa..

Naxos was not affected.

Earthquakes occur constantly in Greece, whether on the islands or on the mainland. There are also storms, landslides, wildfires, and heat waves.
There are about 30 million visitors who come to Greece every year. In your opinion, would they still come knowing that they would experience disasters?
