Flights from Athens to Santorini

Hello,
We're planning our trip to Greece for roughly the 2nd and 3rd weeks of September 2017. We'll arrive in Athens and then fly to Santorini. We've never flown any kind of smaller regional carrier overseas. Do you folks have any airline recommendations for that flight, and do you know how early we can book those tickets? Thanks, everyone.

The two airlines I know of that fly from Athens to Santorini are Aegean Air/Olympic Airlines and Ryanair. If you sign up for the Aegean Air email newsletter you'll be informed when they offer some deeply-discounted fares, sometimes as low as €29 one way. Otherwise just keep checking both websites until schedules for next September are finalized. Then keep checking to make sure the schedule doesn't change. They'll inform you if it does by email but sometimes it gets lost.

We've used Aegean Airlines a number of times and were more than satisfied. Actually, they are rated one of Europe's best airlines and we've never had any issues with lateness, cancellations or safety issues. Great service and good deals.

Obviously things can go wrong with any type of travel, but for the most part Aegean is a great airlines.

It will be quite a while before you can book for Sept. 2017 but you can get an idea of costs by doing a test search now.

As stated you can sign up for emails to get news of sales and bargains.

If you've never flown within Europe, one thing you may not be aware of is that these flights frequently have much lower baggage weight and size limits than trans-Atlantic flights (even on the same carrier). This is true even for "legacy" carriers like Aegean, and is triply true for Ryanair. And these limits are more often enforced than we're used to in the US. They are much more likely to put your carryon in a sizer box, and it doesn't fit, not only do you have to check it and pay a fee, you have to pay a higher fee for doing this at the airport rather than in advance online.

When looking at flights within Europe, it's a good idea to do a dummy booking (up to the point where you put in your credit card) to see all the rules and fees. A cheap initial fare can work out to be more expensive in the end when all the extras you need are added. Of course, feel free to decline any extras you don't need.

Further to Heralds comment, Aegean has a go lite fare that is considerably less expensive than their regular fare, Go lite means you are only bringing cabin baggage. one piece that fits into the measuring devices at check in. Max weight is 8 kilos. You can bring a second personal item as well like a small knapsack. You can still get the go lite fare with a regular size suitcase and can pre pay that at 15 euros when you book. If you have to check it at the airport I believe it is 35 euros.
Seat sales for next year can start as early as December or January.

We are planning the same itinerary for August 2017 and all your comments and suggestions were extremely helpful. We used Aegean Air 4 years ago between Athens and Mykynos and Mykynos and Paris. We did encounter the luggage/carry on issue. On the flight from Athens they made me check my carry on at the airport but on the flight from Mykynos to Paris they did not. Overall a good flight experience. I expect to use them again for next years trip.

By the way Aegean just released their 2017 flight schedule yesterday. It goes all the way to September 2017 inclusive. No seat sales yet though.

I would go with Aegean Airlines and book Flex tickets unless flying carry-on only. The GoLight fare + 1 bag charge is only a few euros less than a Flex ticket which includes 1 free 23 kg bag. The extra benefits of a Flex ticket are worth the small extra charge, IMO. Aegean Airlines is a highly rated carrier, and occasionally has seat sales, so it's worth getting on their mailing list for news of the offers.
