We have 10 days in Greece, want to visit one island (we are not beach people), Santorini it is!
Arriving Delta from NY May 3rd (Thursday) @ 9:50. Making the assumption that connecting (carry on luggage only) Aegean flight at 11:55 AM is reasonable?
Plan to return to Athens early on Saturday and heading for the Peloponnese with rental car. Again main concern at this time is connecting flights in Athens.
Probably but I would like more time since you have to go through immigration and customs and who knows how long the lines will be. Don't know about Aegean but many airlines cut off check in at the 45 min prior to departure. So you could have only an hour ten between flights. I would book something later.
I would book something later.
I'm with Frank.
Your profile shows you are from Georgia, so presumably your trip originates there(?). That means you have to have clockwork precision for 2 flights to make your Athens connection.
I would not want to be that stressed ( 10-11 hr flight) hoping the passport line in ATH is short.
Its your choice, but "I would book something later."
If you're transiting through another EU airport on the way to Athens you will have already passed through Immigration an passport control, so 2 hours is plenty. If not, it will be tight. It would be safer, then, to catch a later flight.
You WILL have time. You are doing the nonstop Delta from NYC -- that is almost always right on time ... (even if it's delayed as much as an hour taking off from JFK -- that's because the plane has 9+ hours to make up the time). Of course, since a jumbo jet has 400 people, it will take 15 minutes to deplane. There are 2 or 3 nonstops from N. America arriving 9- 10 am, AA is first, I think Canada air is right after you. YOu're coming way off season, and not on a weekend, so that cuts down on plane arrivals too. The biggest time is taken waiting in passport control .... people who hustle get to front of line, for slowpokes it's a 20-25 minute wait (but it doesn't matter anyway for those who check bags, because if they are #1 in line, they'd STILL need to wait at baggage claim 20 minutes for bags to pop up on carousel). So that's 45 minutes max. There is NO customs delay, you just walk thru an opening that says "nothing to declare". After that, you might spend 10 minutes at an ATM machine to pick up a few Euros (beware of any ATM that offers "dynamic conversion" -- click NO, because it doubles the % fee). If it's after 10:30 and you are nervous, then skip this step, and get €€ at Santorini airport. ATH has just ONE airport building, so you just walk to the Domestic-flights end, and get into Aegean Check-in line. If u are nervous, have one of you pull along both bags while the other scampers ahead for a place in line. I'd be very surprised if you weren't checked in at counter before 11 AM ... plenty of time to pass thru security & into departure lounge.
You're not doing the "travel-lite" Aegean ticket-version, but the regular ... so the very worst that would happen -- some kind of multiple delay-scenario would be that Aegean without penalty would place you on next flight.
Yes, will buy the Aegean "flex" ticket just in case. Those were my biggest concerns, deboarding 767, clearing customs and making the gate for the connecting flight. Have Euros in pocket already, always take enough home to US so that first day is covered for taxi's, buses, etc. Trying to avoid falling into jet lag coma in the Athens airport while waiting for flight to Santorini. I can make it until about 1 or 2 PM, then have to take a 3 hour nap, standing or lying down!
Last year Barcelona walked right through customs, Paris year before had to wait for customs to open at 6:00 AM. Brussels 3-4 years ago the entire hall was full of arriving passengers, very long wait. Depends upon airport, arrival time and general crowd level I guess.
