First Time Greece with 2 teenagers

Hi all. Planning trip to Greece this summer. What we would like is to pick 1 island to stay and maybe visit 1 during ourstay ( maybe to visit touristy one like Santorini or Mykonos).
Which island you would recommend with kids to stay? Prefer not touristy one but gorgeous, with nice beach and maybe place with pool would be awesome. Easy to get around , great food to enjoy….
Also maybe someone could recommend a place to stay? We need one in Athens and one in the island we ee gonna stay. So for example if you recommend let’s say Milo, maybe you have a place in mind also? 4 people
Our trip should be around 10 days. 2 days planning to se Athens.
Any tips would be appreciated . Thanks!

Since you mention Milos I suppose you are thinking of going to the Cyclades Islands.

In August there are no “non-touristy” islands and most accommodations have already been booked for months. At least the ones that are good deals near a beach, easy to get around... and so on.

How do you want to go to an island, flight? (in the 20 Cyclades islands there are only 6 with an airport and they are the most touristy), or ferry?

What kind of accommodation are you looking for? Airbnb, hotel ? Apartment, villa?

Will you rent a car or only use public buses?

Hi thanks for the reply. I really not sure which island we gonna stay, thats why I am asking for advice. Which one would make sense for the first timers?
Just mentioned Milos because I heard it has beautiful beach. At this point we gonna chose island depending on what living accomodations we gonna find this late in search. I know we a bit too late.
Anything from airbnb, apartment, villa to hotel would work. I think itis important to me walking distance, nice beachand pool. We donot mind to rent a car.

Milos can be a choice, but what you need to know about Milos is that many of its beaches are rocky (due to its history of volcanic activity), and the entire western half of the island is an almost uninhabited Natura 2000 area and is difficult to access.

In terms of sandy beaches Naxos, Paros, Sifnos would be a better choice.
Anyway, in summer you won't have beautiful beaches while avoiding the crowds.

Also see relatively less crowded islands like Tinos, Serifos, Amorgos or Kythnos. These do not have an airport, you will have to go there by ferry.

In August, good accommodation for 4 people near a beach and with a swimming pool will cost between €600 and €1500/night.

Two examples in Paros where I go from time to time:

Santorini might be the place to go with teenagers.  The breathtaking views will surely offer them lots of epic photo ops for their social media. You can opt for discovering towns with them or simply kick back at a cozy cliffside Airbnb with a pool. Mykonos might not be ideal unless they're old enough to enjoy the party buzz.

Naxos and Paros are also great family-friendly islands with stunning beaches for everyone to enjoy.

However, it's advisable to avoid Milos after September due to potential changes in the ferry schedule, which could lead to unexpected cancellations.

Santorini is not an island to go to for its beaches, it is a place with some unique and spectacular landscapes seen millions of times in travel magazines or on the internet. It is also a mass tourism destination where thousands of tourists and cruise passengers disembark every day. Not really a place for kids to have fun. This is the opposite of what you seem to be looking for.

In Milos there is no more risk of potential schedule changes or ferry cancellations than on the other islands. In the event of a sailing ban due to bad weather (strong gale force winds of between 8-9 Beaufort), it will affect all the islands.

Regarding Naxos, note that with Paros it is one of the most crowded islands in summer after Santorini and Mykonos.
The advantage of Naxos is that it is the largest island in the Cyclades where it is possible to escape the crowds if you do not stay in Naxos Town, its capital and close to its 2 or 3 nearby beaches. From Plaka beach (south of Naxos Town) to Agiassos beach there are kilometers of sandy beaches.

See this map where I have listed the vast majority of beaches, villages and things to do and see in Naxos:

Athens is not just the Acropolis and other archaeological museums. it can easily keep you busy for a week.
That being said, if you want to see the basics, you will get a good overview in 2 or 3 full days.

My choice doesn't matter.

I have visited most of the Cyclades islands, I cannot recommend one over another. Just giving you practical information or warning you if it doesn't match what you seem to be looking for.

That being said, there are nearly 200 inhabited and visitable islands in Greece, and since it's your vacation it's up to you to do some basic research first.

Hmm, I can't say the best island as I've only been to Santorini, but that was an amazing experience! It wasn't busy when we went in early June but July and Aug are probably much different. And since the pandemic everything is busier of course.

We stayed at the small townhouse style listed below just outside of Oia. It was very affordable for the space. Our two kids were preteen/teen then. Your teens will love the beauty of Oia and views of the caldera. Rent a car and drive to beaches on the island; we went to one with black pebbles that was unique.
We also took a small boat cruise around the caldera to see other beaches/limestone cliffs around the island and swam in the warm waters in the caldera. Very fun!

Keep looking but this is one option that would be enjoyable!
