Fires in Crete and Athens

I was planning a trip to Crete in mid August. Is the fire there likely to spread across the island? Anyone there now?

I’m not currently in Greece but the wildfires seem to only be in the southern portion of the island. You can do a Google search and find many publications with stories on it. It’s not all of Crete. Unfortunately most of the EU is having a major heatwave, and that, coupled with the lack of rain, means that things are very dry out there, so fires can happen at any time, anywhere. Hard to tell if it’ll still be happening in august, since it’s only the first week of July.

There are frequent wildfires in Greece, both in the islands and on the mainland. The current major wildfire is located 90 kilometers from Heraklion and over 200 kilometers from Chania.

Not to mention the two smaller wildfires near Athens, which are almost over.

A new large wildfire broke out today in southern Evia, and two other wildfires broke out this week in Central and Western Greece.
These are becoming more and more frequent with the high temperatures and wind.

Also to consider: earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and landslides. These have been recurring events in recent months.

I've lost count of the number of times we've experienced wildfires in the Greek islands.
We were in the Dodecanese Islands a few weeks ago and received two earthquake/tsunami alerts on our phones (in the middle of the night). We had been woken up a little earlier, not by the earthquake itself but by some car alarms that were probably triggered by the earthquake.

So, be prepared.
