First, thank you all for your help in planning our 10 day trip to Greece (Santorini/Naxos/Athens) beginning tomorrow. (Background: It's my, hubby, & daughters 14 & 11, first trip to Greece) I'm so excited....
Please help me to nail down a few details.
1) Any suggestions for places to see authentic Greek Folk Dances in any of these places? I heard there was a place in Athens on Friday nights and we'll be there next Friday & Saturday nights.
2) Any suggestions for tours in Naxos--or should we just wing it. We want to do hikes/walking, snorkling or other water sports, see ruins, museums, and minimal shopping. Any suggestions would be appreciated. ;-)
3) We're staying at NLH Fix Hotel in Athens (117 42 Koukaki). How do you suggest we get to the airport Sunday am for a 10am flight home--other than taxi of course.
I am so grateful for this wonderful resource and look forward to taking a European Rick Steves tour one day. Thank you all. :-)
We stayed in the same area. You can walk to Acropolis metro stop and then take it to Syntagma stop, change trains and go to airport. You would need to leave about 6:30 am to do this. It will take more than an hour (depends partly on how long you have to wait for second metro) and you will need to be at airport 2 hours ahead of time.
Alternatively you can walk or taxi to Syntagma square and take a bus.
I had intended to take the metro as our plane left at 12 noon. But there were strikes to and from airport when we arrived and the next day. We decided it wasn’t worth the stress. We had taken the bus to Syntagma square when we arrived as the metro was not running and the taxi line was a mile long. It was a good 20-25 minute walk from bus stop to where we were staying.
I am a big fan of public transportation but I would suggest a taxi. It is a fixed rate to airport and will be about same cost as four metro tickets (more expensive to airport than regular ticket).

If it's a calm day you can take the excursion boat from Naxos to Delos, a world heritage island. You will also be given a short time to explore Mykonos Town.
Thanks for these suggestions. I think we'll try the metro.
We are here in Athens as well. I have family staying at Fix hotel...not sure it’s the same but it’s lovely. Anyway, we use George’s Taxi for transportation. Super reliable, awesome drivers.

We also did an all day tour of Athens with Alex from this company...fantastic! Worth every penny.
Have fun!
DANCE - Dora Stratou Dance theatre is THE MOST outstanding venue in all of Greece for authentic Folk Dances:
http://www.grdance.org/en/ -- it is so outstanding it is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Athens ... Ms Stratou collected authentic dances from every area, every island, dozens & dozens of distinctive costumes from each place ... there is a troup that performs all these, Aft first I thought how can they have hundreds of dancers, findally tumbled to the fact taht there are 24 talentd dancers who make "lightning" quick-changes in minutes & appear totally new. Here's a video of a fw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vF8F4pM_HP0&list=PLbg9dH632XeN1kdJJJbVV3P6UhWUct_Cf
-- performances are outdoors in a park. Easiest way to get there is taxi ... it's a long program, you may not wish to stay til the end ... but VERY worthwhile. NOTE: Get a taxi Number to call when ready to leave... impossible to flag a taxi fro that location it's at the far edge of Philapappou Park, no street traffic w. cruising taxis. http://www.orangesmile.com/destinations/img/athens-map-big.jpg (click to enlarge) its on the far left marked #72.
NAXOS TOURS -- Stop and check in agencies on first5 day... don't take the first you see. Here is an excellent posting by another Naxophile with links to the tour choices https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g189431-i1324-k6710752-Naxos_excursion_and_fast_ferry_schedules_2013-Naxos_Cyclades_South_Aegean.html There are good half-day & Full-day tours, and they are excellent ways to see the highlights of the island in 1 day. ... inlcuding ruins, mountain villages with marble streets, a mountain of marble, a church smaller than a 1920 Mdel T Garage, A distillery for a unique liqueur. The full-day tours driv along scenice AND scary cliffside roads up to the very end of the island at the fishing village of Appollon, an there's a 90-minute lunch break so tell the girls to bring their swimsuits... many people eat at the taverna there, but I found it was fun to bring a picnic. At the tip of Appolonia and end of row of restaurants is a very small cove, but if you go around the point, behind the cafes, there is a long stretch of beach with some big rocks to sun upon (brng your beach towels; no sunbed rentals).
NAXOS ACTIVITIES -- BEACH if You stay at St. George Beach adjacent to the port town as I always advise in September, it will be the liveliest. Flisvos Sports center has equipment for windsurfing, snorkeling kayaking etc. FLisvos also does organized hikes. MUSEUM -- you absolutlely MUST go up to top of Kastro (high area) of Naxos via the winding "maze" lanes. The tiny Naxos Museum has the WOrlds BEST collections of those mysterious pre-Minoan Marble Statuettes. The NYC Met Museum has a huge room just to feature 6 small ones -- tehe Naxos Museums has 6 Huge CASES full -- ranging from 2" to 3 feet tall. Stunning. SHOPPING - if you are also in Santorini, you can windo shop for jewelry there, but don't buy... naxos prices ae MUCH better. On your day tour, in a mountain village of Chalki, there's a great shop, Olive & something., wonderful stuff made of olive wood. In Sept the clothing shops in Naxos Towns will be having great sales. EVENINGS -- in that Naxian link above, there's a link about concerts and "special" evenings in Naxos in September. it was from 2013, but probbly similar this year.
Just to add to the info about the metro, the timetable for Syntagma to Airport trains is here
http://www.stasy.gr/index.php?id=70&L=1
I do this several times a year and have always found them reliable.
The NLH Fix hotel is nearer to Syngrou Fix station than Acropolis. Still only a couple of stops from Syntagma. The trip is round five minutes but you also need to allow a few minutes to change platforms at Syntagma.
Have a great trip.
Alan
PS if you want a reasonable souvlaki restaurant close to your hotel try the Ambrosia right in the pedestrian precinct as you come out of Syngrou metro. Nothing fancy but reasonably priced place used by locals and tourists. The address is Drakou 3, koukaki.
