Ferry from Paros to Santorini

Is one ferry company or ferry type better than the others, or do you just schedule based on timing. I read on a TripAdvisor forum that BLUE STAR DELOS (BDE) was the best, but would like people's opinion here before I buy tickets for my August, 2018 trip. Thanks.

Hi Edward, We are taking the ferry this June from Paros to Santorini and have selected Blue Star ferries. I have read that the rest are faster large catamarans where you are required to sit inside. From what I hear, the ride into Santorini is pretty picturesque so we want to be able to take pics from the deck.

Thanks. I got the same opinion from TripAdvisor and suspect we all go to both websites—kind of an echo chamber. It makes sense unless you like to ride fast, I guess. I was on a hydrofoil once, and it was fun but you couldn't see much with water flying around and a plastic tarp for protection.

We used a mix of ferry types traveling between the islands. The high speed ones where you sit inside are not comfortable at all. And you can’t see well out the windows. Book one with outside and inside decks so you can enjoy the passing island scenery.

My experience with ferries is that if the larger slower ferries (Like the Blue Star ferry) work for you, take them. The faster ferries will get you there quicker, but the weather and the wind needs to be very good, otherwise the trip will be rough. I am less worried about the view or being able to be out on a deck, other than going into a port or out of a port, there is little to see anyway.

Thanks for the replies. It’s the slow boat to Santorini for us. ;-)

Hi! Yeap... definitely get the slow one. You will enjoy the trip and get to see other islands as well since the ferries make plenty of stops before arriving to Santorini. I've only been on a Flying Cat once to get from Piraeus to Amorgos and didn't like the experience much. It was very bumpy due to extreme wind conditions that day. I felt dizzy all the way, it is as if it is flying above the waves. Plus, no way to get on deck and enjoy the ride. Have in mind that you can find conventional ferries for the Cyclades both by Blue Star and Hellenic Seaways. Great shipping companies, they have similar types of ships, safe, luxurious, comfy, with nice decks! Hopping on a ferry like these will add value to your Greek summer experience ;)
