Family trip: Athens + Naxos Aug 2026

We are looking at a trip to Greece this coming August. I do not have exact dates of travel yet, but it will be mid-August, and we could end up with about 10 days in Greece (including day of arrival by plane from USA, excluding departure date to fly home. It will be 2 adults and 2 kids ages 10 and 15 who have done a number of trips to Europe and are experienced with jet lag, public transport, museums, ruins, castles, sights, new food, small towns, big cities etc.

We basically want to focus on the main sights in Athens and then slow down and enjoy Naxos for as long as possible. We are looking at hotel options near Agios Prokopios beach. I am leaning toward renting a car for the duration of the visit to the island, even though there may be days that we don’t go further than the hotel and the nearby beach. But the island sounds like it has so many places on the interior, and beaches scattered around that would be fun to explore - likely on half day trips in the mornings + lunch, then return to hotel for the afternoon. Or morning at the hotel and an afternoon and dinner somewhere on the island (open to all suggestions for either scenario).

I am trying to determine the best length of time to stay on the island. I don’t want to rush. I feel like 4 full days excluding travel days might be too short, and thinking of 5 or MAYBE 6 depending on our flights and when we need to be back in the USA.

I assume we won’t be bored no matter how many days we opt for. It seems we could even day trip to nearby Paros or Mykonos -which would be good incentive to maximize our days staying on Naxos.

For Athens, I don’t think we need too much time there, I don’t like the idea of trying to come off an international flight and then try to catch a short island hopper flight that same day. It could involve hours sitting around the airport after the overnight flight which I think the wife and kids would hate.

Thinking on arrival we check into hotel in Athens (Plaka district ideally) and have the afternoon and evening to relax, wander and find dinner. On the first full day we would start early at Acropolis, followed by the museum and maybe agora. Plus lunch and a siesta/shower at hotel before dinner. Then on the 2nd full day after landing, we get a ferry to Naxos.

After Naxos, we could just overnight in Athens and then fly home….or we could try to add one extra day in Athens if the forum here agrees and has ideas for what to do.

Open to any and all ideas, I know the family will love everything about Greece…the history, sights, sea, beaches, and especially the FOOD.

Sounds well thought out to me, though some will still urge you on pressing on to the island on arrival day. You know your family and their wherewithal for travel better than anyone else. I have done it both ways and whatever works, works.

Thank you. I guess to expand on my thought process -

I would actually prefer a ferry to Naxos as this is a lot cheaper than flying. And the issue that I seem to see with the ferries is that they depart very early in the morning, or later in the afternoon. So if our flight lands around 1030amat Athens, we would have to kill the whole day waiting for a ferry around 4 or 5pm and then not get to the island until late…

I am sure I am missing something - so if any advice on connecting to a ferry after landing around. 1030 am on our flight from the USA, I am all ears.

Also, just am nervous if the flight is delayed a couple of hours and we miss the ferry. Which is why it seems to be less stressful to just do a quick visit to Athens at the beginning.

I can see it being more convenient to just hang at the airport if one were flying, but since you are only going to one island by ferry for a longish stay, I still think splitting the big city time into two works fine. It can be nice to jump off the plane on arrival all excited and do the main sites, then when you return, just explore the city leisurely or see something you were too tired for on the first day. I like to stay outside on jet lag day, so I’d do the acropolis on arrival day but save museums for the last day.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to split your Athens stay as long as you don’t mind the additional hotel checkin/checkout.

Whatever you do, don’t plan on visiting the Acropolis in the afternoon in August. It can get crazy hot and would make for a miserable experience. We went in July (8:00 am arrival) and on our way DOWN at 10:00 am, there was someone already being treated for heat exhaustion. Either go first thing in the morning (preferable) or as late in the day as possible.

Have fun, we loved Naxos!

Good point, I forgot it was August! Honestly I was as impacted by seeing the acropolis from afar as I was by seeing it up close, and in August I would probably limit my Athens time to the minimal. Cold museums and a plan to return one day is how I’d view it.

Good point re: the heat. I would definitely plan for the 8:00 entry time for the acropolis to start as early in the day as possible. Follow that with the museum which I hope/ assume is air conditioned. Lunch, then agora, if the kids and we have the stamina in the heat.

And I was just discussing with my wife now, if we minimize the total time in Athens, we figure that if and when we ever return to Greece, we have no choice but to go via Athens, so we will be able to catch up on whatever else we didn’t see this time around.

Say as opposed to Italy, where there are any number of international entry points that one may never come across again on a true visit.

There is no need to get to Piraeus to take a ferry to Naxos. From the airport it takes 30 minutes to get to Rafina port from where you will have 2 ferries to Naxos in the afternoon. At 14.00 there is the Golden Express from Golden Star Ferries and at 14.20 the Superrunner Jet from Seajets. That way you will be in Naxos around 18.30.

Nicksy gave you a great solution. Rafina is a lovely little port, much smaller than Pireaus. You could taxi to Rafina from the airport, buy tickets from one of the ticket sellers right at the port, wander to a little outdoor cafe and watch the ferries come and go while you're waiting for yours. Then have a lovely mini-cruise, relaxing on the way to Naxos.

This plan would give you 6 or 7 nights on Naxos, depending on how much Athens time you want. By the time you return to Athens, you'll be energized, ready for a bustling city . . . and I think you'll enjoy it a lot more than if you tried to have your Athens time in the beginning of your trip.

Having a car at Prokopios is a good plan. It gives you lots of opportunity to explore the island. and the other beach areas.
You have not mentioned Naxos town as part of your trip. I hope you do intend to visit the town. It is a delight walking the waterfront promenade and wending your way through the maze of back alley up to the Venetian era kastro .
For fun here are some images of Naxos.

Thank you for the responses. I rechecked, and our flight actually lands at 8:10 am, assuming it’s on time. I will check the ferry schedule from that alternate port to see if something might line up. It would certainly be easier than splitting Athens into 2 separate short visits.

The Flickr album photos are amazing. Really beautiful and so much better than what comes up on Google images and instagram. I love taking photos, so I will enjoy that in Naxos!

Yes, we definitely plan to explore Naxos town and others. It looks like the perfect speed and size for our family to wander in and find some shops and food.
