Falassarna Beach Hotels

We are a couple in our early 80's making our 5th trip to Crete in September. We're slow travelers, no longer driving, love walking on sandy beaches. We've tried adding Falassarna to previous trips, but it never worked. I just hope I didn't wait too long ... it looks like there's lots of new construction now.

Anyway, we have 4 nights (Sept 10-14). We are looking for a quiet, beachfront hotel that's an easy walk to the sand and to tavernas for meals. We don't need a pool or sunbeds.

The full itinerary, in case this helps: we'll spend our first week in Greece in Napflio (first time there as well). Then fly to Chania and taxi to Falassarna. A bus back to Chania at the end for two nights (we've been there several times), then a bus to Sougia for 2 weeks (another repeat).

We had looked at Petalida a few years ago but it looks like its restaurant has closed now and it's a steep walk to the sand? Any recommendations would be welcome.

I don't think that you will find anything that's really beach front in Falasarna. Everywhere is a little set back and steeply above the beach due to the sudden upward land shift (almost 9 meters) in 365 CE.
Petalida and a few other places are about as close as you will get to the beach.

And yes, there is a lot of construction and new buildings and many greenhouses. The charm of Falasarna is certainly very diminished though the beaches are very good and the sea is beautifully clear

Thanks for the responses. I just looked at some YouTube videos (which I should have done first!) and decided it’s not exactly what we had in mind. I think we’re looking for more of a village …

Falasarna is definitely not a village. As you're going to Sougia you could also spend a few days in Paleochora nearby. Large village with excellent beaches and quite a few beach front hotels (both on the sandy beach and on the pebble beach). You can easily get from Sougia to Paleochora or vice versa by ferry

Thanks for confirming that. We’ve been to Paleochora and will likely return there. Just wanted to make sure we’re not missing a great new place.

Have you considered Kalyves? Lovely long mainly sandy beach especially away (west) of the small working town where you can find sunbeds but also long expanses of beach where you can just put your towel on the sand. Plenty of accommodation close to or almost on the beach. Lots of tavernas within flat walking distance. Easy distance from Chania by taxi or bus. I’ve returned a few times over the years, most recently in 2023, and have always had an enjoyable stay.
